Uh, has anyone EVER seen Sierra's auto-updater actually find a patch?

Neither have I.

I can run it to this date, with N2, GPL, and all the others installed and it
does not, and never has, found any patches available.  I always have to
download and install manually...

The patch is still in beta and being tested, I suspect when it is final and
released the auto update will install it.
I tend to just get them manually though myself, I never cared much for that
auto update feature.
