Don't know if you're still having trouble...

This is what solved my problem - installing the AGP drivers for my
operating system (Win98 SE) - thanks to Greger Huttu for that pearl of
wisdom.  I'd rebuilt my PC, formatted and reinstalled everything but
didn't realise I'd have to install specific AGP drivers for my
motherboard.  I was getting stutters and the occasional pause but now
I'm smooth and trouble free, with much better performance to boot.

Appologies if this is old news and/or common knowledge.

Cheers,

Where do you get these AGP drivers?

Either from the CD that came with your mobo or from the manufacturer
website.  www.ecsusa.com in my case.

Best of luck,

You'll need to find the website of the mobo's manufacturer. Even then, you
may be pointed to the website of the AGP's chip manufacturer. A lot of the
mobo's out today use the Via chipset (and AGP drivers are included in their
4in1 drivers found here www.viaarena.com) Be sure to know your mobo's name
and model number.

If you have a hybrid board, and it has Via and AMD, typically the AMD will
be the North Bridge and that is the AGP, so www.amd.com and look for their
NorthBridge drivers. (766 Chipset IIRC)

Any other mobo combos I am not familiar with, but you see where I'm going.
Find the website of the manufacturer of either or both the mobo and AGP
chipset.

Thanks Mark. I'm going to look into the AGP and see if it isn't somehow the
cause of the problems. I have a feeling you might be right.
