Hey maybe we do need a GPL aholics Anonymous group. It does make me feel a
little less nuts knowing I am not the only one that is going overboard for
this sim.

As an e-mail I received suggested, Here goes..........

Hi, I'm Turbojoe and I am a GPLaholic.

>VROC, and I *hate* playing online games. =)

I know how you feel, but VROC is awesome and has to be experienced to
be believed. If you have good ping times racing is absolute fun, the
best I've had on the machine in years.

Consider this: the desire to try VROC got me, the most ardent
Windows/Microsoft Hater you'll find in this newsgroup, go through the
hassle of installing ISDN support for my tiny windows installation that I
have left to play GPL (everything else is Linux, of course). It took
me an hour, but it was damn well worth it. ;-)

Cheers,

Uwe

Man, I bought an Abit BH6 motherboard, new ATX case, Celeron 300A tested and
clocked to 450 mhz, new SB Live value pci soundcard, and 2 more speakers for
the rear, all for GPL and N99.
Goodness gracious, whow knows what the next 6 months will bring.

How much did i sink ito GPL...Lets recap.  Game: $44.95 at CompUSA...64 more MB
RAM: $200...Wheel: gift but i would have gladly spent the 70 bucks
myself...Assorted accessories: $30.  How much more will i spend...3dfx board:
$150-200....surround sound: $300-500 (will work with TV too though)...Cable
modem/connection: i dunno....ALOT.   All in all i think around $1000 in
upgrades and the like when im done.  Oh yea...$250 for a new chair that i made
sure was comfortable for driving.

All this and a car payment on a 99 Firebird.  Can we say "deficiet spending"?

% Thanks for the info... I've checked out their web page and it looks alright.
% Glad to see it has paddles for gear shifts, since that was on my must list.
% Didn't notice anything about whether it had a split axis, which my
% flight-sim conditioned brain seems to think is separate controls for braking
% and acceleration, so that you can do both at the same time.  Is this
% important?  It would seem so, but I don't have $1000 burning a hole in my
% pocket for a ECC wheel setup.  $80 US sounds about like my price range at
% the moment, but I might go a little higher.  Later I expect this GPL
% ***ion will take control of my life and I'll probably start pawning my
% wife's jewelry and start selling crack on the street to support my habit.
% :-)

Yes, the SuperSport has separate axis for the pedals.  The downside is
that it will only work with pure DOS games that support split axis.
However, for Windows based games, you can combine the pedals via the
setup applet for the wheel.  The pedals have an excellent feel and
precision to them.  Since 2/3'rds of the steering done in GPL is via the
pedals, I think having good pedals is important.

He he, Joe I know just how you feel.....

When I first tried GPL on my old pc (ATX m/b & K6 based) it just
wasn't good enough. So I went out and built me a whole new pc,

& 17" Monitor) mainly just for GPL (though I *do* use it for other
stuff occasionally too).

The connections in my area suck terribly, but after all that if you say
that it was damn well worth it, I've got to give it a try. =)

Thanks again... looks like you've sold me on it, since I don't think I can
go too wrong at that price.

I think that Thrustmaster owes you a commission!  :-)

GPL you are killing me!!

by Roy Berub » Sun, 28 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I just ordered a SuperSport yesterday. My old T1 still works but is
getting just too sloppy and my lap times are getting worse. Gpl wore it
out! Before Gpl I was an occasional racing sim fan, but now I'm hooked.

The stainless steel shaft and bushing on the SuperSport should help it
last a long time. I was real tempted to get an ECCI wheel, or a TSW, but
I'll give this one a try first. An ECCI wheel would be worth more than
my car!

It will probably take days or weeks to get used to the paddle shifters,
since I'm so used to the stick shifter on the T1. But that is the price
of progress.
