Beware of the Porsche 6 engine in the Beck Spyder. I've spent a few hours
with Chuck Beck discussing his cars and the subject of the flat six came up.
He told me that the engine is much too heavy for the car and that most of
his customers who have installed them ended up removing them and installing
either a built 1750cc VW or a Porsche 912 engine. The weight of the 6 causes
some handling problems and actually slows the car down, it sure sounds nice
though<g>. I used to see a beautiful red Beck 550 on my freeway commute 2 or
3 times a week. Man, can that car stop traffic!
His other chassis, the Lister replica, really has caught my fancy. A nice
small-block Ford V-8 in a 1200 lb chassis ought to turn some heads and burn
up some rear tires!
