What the HELL is wrong with PC Gamer? To rank GP4 so very highly is bad
enough -but to rate it some 12% higher than F12002 is just shocking.

Yes, Harriers standing next to the track at silverstone.
Maybe if i play OutRun on my sega megadrive on the tv.
Ok, it doesnt look that bad, until you notice Processor Occupacy 3042%
This is something left from the revs-readme, right?
Yes. Its the best Scaletrix-simulation out right now.
Dont forget the futureproof multiplayer too. Lol :)
LMFAO
It's microsoft train sim with tarmac

PC Gamer UK? Was it reviewed by Trevor Witt? If so, then you can just rip
that review right out of your magazine coz he is Geoff Crammond's number 1
fan. I used to subscribe, but I got a little pissed off with the magazine
and dumped it. It is a fantastic game of Formula One to drive with the
keyboard, but it is not a sim. If they gave it +90% for being a great game
then that is fine by me, but giving it +90% for a simulation is just damned
wrong. They keep calling the simulation aspect 'anal' (because they think it
is massively detailed), when 'anal' should just be translated as 'arse'.
Their GPL review compared GP2 and GPL (ROFL!). NASCAR 1&2 got decent
reviews, then NASCAR 3 got about 20% ('all you do is turn left' was
basically the review). N4 onwards didn't even get reviewed to my knowledge
(although I got a N4 demo on a coverdisc).

I noticed a couple of big sell-outs in PC Gamer (that's right, I do mean a
publisher buying a good review in the magazine through an exclusive deal or
reserving lots of advertising space), but the last straw was the GP3 review.
Just laughable. Haven't bought a single issue since.
PC Zone is also losing it's grip on racing simulation reviews a bit, IMO
(Steve Hill is a nice guy, but he just doesn't seem to get Nascar <g>), but
they do appear to be more independant.
I think we've stumbled onto an interesting side track here... how does the
group regard magazine (or even web reviews for that matter) with reference
to believability and perceived skill level of the reviewers?
Jan.

Fwiw, I don't hardly even read them. To many politics/biases usually
involved. If something sounds interesting, I get it and try it out. Can
always get rid of it if it's a dog.

Isn't he the guy that said GT3 is the best racing sim on any platform?
or that F1RC was realistic, since the reviewer could drive the same laptimes
as Michael Schumacher did.. hehe. good laugh anyway :)
Magazine reviews (print, that is, online is an entirely
different matter) are usually poorly written, don't focus on
the aspect that is of most interest to me (physics, online
play) and are usually written to fit a certain time frame
(read: hastily ;-)
Yep, RAS is where I go when I want to know what a sim is really
like.
Cheers,
uwe

That's odd, the only Sweedish magazines we get here in the States
don't seem to have much sim stuff in them...

I *do* write. I just did reviews of Le Mans 24 hours and F1 2002 for
the PC on IGN PC (pc.ign.com).
I still do some DigitalSports writing from time to time as well.
As far as the GT3 question. I don't think I said that, but I might
have said something similar because GPL came out AFTER GT3 did. I
believe my main point about GT3 was that at the time it was the best
DRIVING game, but not the best RACING game (the racing is actually
pretty pathetic). The best Racing game I've played, at least against
the computer, would be Jarrett & Labonte Stock Car Racing for the PSX
(known properly and internationally as World Touring Car Championship)
by Codemasters. After that gem, GPL, NASCAR 2002 and F1 2002 all
share the stage, though the latter 3 are more realistic physics-wise
than J&L was, obviously, but again, I differentiate between the
driving model and the racing action.
