BT are running a 6 month trial ADSL connection, this will cost 30 per month
for 24 hour access at a minimum 16x ISDN speeds.

This will be in North & West London only.

Check it out at

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Now we could get some great GPL hosts in the UK.

I would be happy to be involved in running a league, if we can find some
hosts.

Cheers

I think the trial's been running for a while & its been extyended which says
that all might not be going quite to plan...!!!!!!

Also I believe there is heavy firewalling which might restrict what you can
do but in principle , great idea!
I.

It's being installed for me on the 26th Feb and I intend to do some GPL hosting.

Cheers,
Paul

This has been going on for months now, so if you're not in now you
ain't getting in. On top of that, AFAIK for the trial at least there
is no server access - you will be able to join other games but you
won't be able to host - not FTP, WWW, Quake or GPL.

Probably (hopefully) changed for the eventual commercial service but
pretty hopeless otherwise.

Cheers!

I think you're patially wrong here, John. They've just extended the trial (to
include my area) and I signed up 10 days ago!
As for hosting GPL - well I hope you're wrong.
Cheers,
Paul

FYi, there is some port baring. You can't run ftp and web servers on their
default ports, etc.

bear in mind, that upstream traffic on the BT ADSL trial is what, 70 kbps, not
the 1 mbps downstream.

Well, in that case I think you're a total, total, total, total git! I
just want you to know that :-)

Me too - 'twould be nice to have a really fast UK host. Maybe we could
even get a league going.

Cheers!

No, but you can send and receive IP packets. The BT Interactive helpdesk chap said,
"You should have no problem hosting GPL races provided you stay online during the
race". "Online?" I questioned. "Well because of the firewall you can't host races
remotely and then go offline", he answered. "I think I understand", I replied, "anyway,
I plan to take part in the races". "You should be okay, then", he said. It remains to
be seen, but they are very helpful and seem concerned to assist people to do things
during the trial period.

Wrong numbers. 256 kbps upstream, 2 mbps downstream. The worst recorded upstream so far
in the trial in 238 kbps. Should be okay for a full grid with a bit of GPL file
tweaking.

Paul

neeeeyeugh :-)

Good news from the BT Interactive helpdesk. Very helpful people up there north of
Inverness (your neck of the woods, is it, John?, or relative to them perhaps you
are a softie Southerner) reckoned I will be able to host GPL races on VROC.

I planned to run a British GPL series when I get my cable modem but the
sooner the better! If Paul can host GPL races it would be great.
