Hawaii/Modem Question

by C » Wed, 31 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hi all, I just purchased a new USR Sportster 28.8 (33.6) modem
the other day, and when I connect to Hawaii I get a SLOW CONNECTION
warning.  My latency is listed as .250, which I believe is as slow as
you can get and still be able to race.  I am using the standard modem
string from the modems.cfg (all error correction and compression turned
off, connect at 9600) is there a better one out there?  Or is this modem
just slow?  I used to connect with my friends SupraExpress 14.4 and
never got the SLOW CONNECTION message.  Anyone run into this problem or
anything similar?  This modem was pretty cheap (~120 after rebate) is it
not a good modem?  Also, does a slower connection actually affect
gameplay?  I haven't noticed anything while racing....

Any Help is appreciated,
CJ

I have a USR 28.8 Vi modem with DSVD and I get latencies of 0.11 to 0.15. I
had a USR 14.4 prior to that and got similar performance. I'm pretty sure
I'm using AT&F1 for the initialization string.

Longer latencies will definitely have an effect. You'll see cars kind of
dancing around on the track which makes it a dicey situation to make a pass
(or be passed, but I try to avoid that. <g>)

CJ -

You connection may not be as slow as the initial latency reported;
sometimes the latency doesn't stablize for a few seconds, but once the line
stabilizes you get a solid low latency connection.  You can check this by
going to the "chat" screen and typing CTRL-Y, which will display your
immediate latency as well as the quality of the connection.  If the numbers
reported are good for latency (less than about .15) and in high 90's for
"quality", you've probably got a solid connection.

Note - if you're in a race and notice you're having problems which seem
like they might be modem related, you can type CTRL-Y in the driving
screen.  The result goes both to your chat history and back to our service

you'd like me to review a specific race log where you experience a problem.
