No More DOS.

Hello All.
I think it is great that the next version of NASCAR will not be a DOS
game. But the next version of Windows, code name Millenium, will have no DOS
support either. This is great for new games, since they will all have to be
based on the Win 9x kernel. However those of us who want to still play our
old games while upgrading our OS's, well we are SOL.....
Your can learn more about this topic and many others at your local
library....   no... not really... you can follow the progress of Millenium
at  http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Dual boot multiple OS's?  I painlessly run Win95 OSR2, WIN NT and Linux on
my notebook, and I'm an idiot :)

Current HDs are so amazingly large, you could have a different OS for
every day of the week.  Sure, it's a pain to rebot to play, but a lot of
us did that to get the most out of GP2.  Hardly SOL... just
inconvenienced.

Painlessly? Dual-bootting is very rarely painless. It's usually a
royal p[ain in the butt. Very few users will put up with that.

However, I strongly suspect the rumor about the next version of
Windows is simply false. Microsoft would be insane to drop
nearly-perfectly functioning DOS support. No one would buy it. Despite
the proliferation of Win32 apps everyone still has at least a couple
DOS utilities they depend on. (I still use the DOS command line for
some file management stuff, since the Explorer interface is so
annoying.)

Not only that... Windows is soooooo buggy still with all of the damned
crashes (if I had a dollar for every time explorer crashed, I'd buy an F1
team)...

Painless when speaking of running Win9X and WinNT on the same machine.  Your
only problem lies in Win9X's stupidity of overwriting the boot sector so if
you have to reinstall Win9X (more likely than WinNT), you gotta reinstall
WinNT....

Since the next version of Win9X isn't a total rewrite, and DOS is part of
it, I doubt you will see its disappearance.  However, you may find that it
no longer gives you the option of rebooting the computer into MS-DOS mode.
Command-Line mode, yes, but not true MS-DOS mode.  Just speculation on my
part. :)

Really, I used LILO... it set up easily, and gives me a nice prompt at
startup, then defaults to Windows after 10 seconds.

I run a menu driven "multi-config" to change from Windows9x to
DOS games or any PC language I want. Is this like LILO Steve?
I dont know what this is?

LILO is the boot manager that comes with Linux.

Look at the headlines....  Millenium has no legacy code. This means NO DOS.
WindowsCE is the same thing. The Win9X kernel stripped of all legacy
software, yet still being able to support the complete Windows 32-bit
subsystem. And it fits on a 4Mb ROM chip. So what we really will be seeing
is more of a home version of Windows CE.
It might work really well....    Then again it might be the seventh sign of
the coming of the end of the world.

Shell out the cash for System Commander.  It's worth every penny.  At one
time I was using it to multi-boot DOS, Win95, NT Workstation, and Linux.
I'm planning on using it on a test server at work to multiboot DOS, NT
Server, Linux, Free BSD, and NetWare.  Point being, System Commander makes
multi booting life about as easy as it can get.

... and becomes a MAJOR pain in the ***when anything half-serious
goes wrong, like a virus, hard-drive crash, etc. They are simply not a
solution for the masses. Only die-hard techies will do it, or people
who HAVE to do it for work-related reasons.
