Sim Racing FOV

I've come to the conclusion that the optimum field of view (FOV)
setting in a simulator of any type is one that corresponds to the same
FOV you have in real life.  For instance, when you are driving a
racing simulator, it's best if the view of the car dash, mirrors,
etc., fills up the same space as it does in real life.

I've started doing this as much as possible.  TH2Go setups make it
possible to use low FOV settings compared to conventional single CRT
displays.  For me, it makes it easier to drive because the details of
the track are larger than they would be with wider FOV's.

Assuming a wide-angle display system like a TH2Go or large format LCD,
are there any reasons to stick with higher FOV settings?  I can't see
any, but apparently some people don't mind the shrunk-down appearance
of the car and track that wider FOV's create.

What sort of FOV settings does everyone here use?  What sort of
display system?  Have you experimented much with changing the FOV
settings?

I tend to agree the lower the FOV the better in conjunction with
widescreen or multi monitors.

I think though that many sim racers have adjusted to the shrunken view,
especially those bought up on 14" CRTs! and find that the extra screen
size allows them to get more peripheral vision rather than a closer to
life view.

In most sims the lower FOV has improved the overall sensation with the
exception of RACE which feels a bit strange with a low FOV and a wider
FOV solved it. No idea why.

I'm using a 26" widescreen LCD with a fresnel lens in front.

Cool!  I was using a Fresnel lens with a 19" monitor prior to getting
TH2Go.  I really likes the lens, but haven't felt like messing with
them on the triple head setup.

How large of a lens did you get?  Are you using the 3Dlens?

Never heard of a 26", you sure it's not a 24"? Or is it a TV/Monitor?

It's a TV/monitor made by acer.

It's a 24" standard ratio and sits about 10" from the screen. I got it
from www.rcsimulations about 10 years ago. My ideal would be 3 26"
monitors. What I don't like about the TH2Go is that it doesn't wrap
around you.

In NR2003, if you have a widescreen of a certain res or higher, it locks in
the FOV and it can't be adjusted.  I think it maxes out.

Pat,

Here are two pages with my Th2Go and Fresnel lenses.

http://home.comcast.net/~seekeating/r/th2go/
http://home.comcast.net/~seekeating/r/3monprob/

Hopefully you can get something useful from them :).

Man!  Those pictures look awesome  :)  I"m going to have to break down
and get some lenses set up with my TH2Go.

Thanks Pat.

Some people have commented that it looks like you'd need arms 6 feet
long to reach the steering wheel, but that's just the way the pictures
look to the camera.  In reality you are sitting as close to the front
lens and if you only had one screen where as the camera was way far away
to get the full width to fit in the photo.  This distance also caused
way more distortion in the side lenses to appear in the photos than what
you really see when sitting the proper distance from the lenses.
