Don't you just hate these posts .. anyway .... needs must

I need a replacement FF steering wheel for GPL

Any recommendation?

1) Must be FF
2) Not bothered about pedals, I use separate MS pedals
3) I am used to gear shift paddles, specifically where I can
  pull forward to change up, flick back to change down -
  with LEFT HAND.
  I could learn a new technique but would rather not have
  to, there ain't enough hours in the day as it is.

I often see the "what is the best wheel" question asked but have
never really paid much attention as I've been happy with the ACT
Labs and this is often the answer given to those sorts of questions.

I think I heard good things about the GUILLEMOT FERRARI FF
wheel, any one got one care to comment?
Specifically about gearshift options?
Can it operate like 3) above

I can get the new Logitech WingMan Formula Force GP wheel. I
know it's supposed to be inferior to the old model but would this
suit my option 3) above.

Anyone else any FF wheel recommendation?

A ny help & advice very much appreciated.

No, it only has two buttons on the back of the wheel, one for up and one
for down.

If I where in the US or if Just Deals shipped outside the US
I'd have one of these like a shot.

I think the ACT Labs is under warranty but it took 2-3 weeks
to get it replaced before so I need to pick up something quick
in the meantime. I've opted to give the Guil Ferrari a go and
then work on getting the ACT Labs repaired,

Thanks to all who replied

I think you'll be very happy with the Guillemot.... great pedals with LOTS
of travel, although they need a little getting used to because they feel
very soft. The wheel itself is very nice, good grip, buttons all the right
places & a stick shift if you prefer that. The FF is IMHO very smooth and
have a wide "powerrange" I myself drive with toned down force, but there
should be enough power to give you a decent workout if you like that kind of
settings.

Will do Rik. It should be here tomorrow and I've an Int Long Ring
race tomorrow night and an Int Long Crystal Palace Thursday, so
these should give it a good workout.

I may continue to use my MS Precision Pedals which is what I used with
the ACT Labs, certainly for a few days, as I'm used to them.

I like the idea of the stick-shift on the right as it's in the right
place for realism although I assume it's push to change up, pull to
change down. It will take a little getting used to but much prefer
that to buttons on the wheel (tried it before when the ACT labs
paddles broke).

Force wise I really just like subtle forces, my ACT Labs was set
at 70%/50%/0% in control panel and fairly conservatively in
core.ini so I don't think I'll have a problem that way.

What do you have your settings (control panel/core.ini) to Mikkel?
Might save me some tinkering time :-)

Cheers

I've got the Guillemot/Thrustmaster Ferrari wheel and I like it.  It's got
scads of buttons including shift paddles and a shifter (on the right).  The
paddles are meant for right=up and left=down but there's no reason why you
couldn't used the POV hat on the left (there's one on the right too) for
shifting up/down with your left thumb.

I found the FF kind of abrupt in coming on & off when I first got it, but
either I'm used to it now or it's broken in, it's so much a part of my
driving now that I don't even notice it until it does something odd.
Occasionally after a brush with a curb or wall the FF forces will stay on
like the wheel's pulling, it makes you think you've broken your suspension,
after a couple of laps it goes away, it might be a slipping belt.

The wheel has a little play on the shaft, like a loose bearing, someday I'll
take the cover off and see if anything's worked loose.

I get best results if I re-calibrate the wheel in GPL every boot.

Check http://www.simracing.dk/gpl/resourcer/tips.htm and scroll down 2/3
down the page.... you cant miss it even if the text is in danish.

My own current settings are as follows:

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1
force_feedback_damping = 500
force_feedback_latency = 0.0045
max_steering_torque = 250

and in the control panel:
Overall: 90%
Spring: 0%
Damper: 0%
Default: 0%

The stick-shift is very good and a must have IMO. I pull to change up but
you can of course set it either way. I think a gpl driver will be faster
with the paddle shifters but I stick with the stick because it's more
fun.

Mikkel,

Thanks for the info re: your settings, also the site above which seems
to have loads of good stuff on it that I'd not seen before. As you say
the page is in Danish but I could figure out a couple of things and
the link led to pages in English that I'd not seen before.

It's a shame Bablefish doesn't have a Danish->English Translator.

If enough people ask I'll translate it all :)
That reminds me... would it be ok, to put your training package (or a link)
in the resource section ??

If you find a translator which can handle swedish you might be able to
translate some of the pages into something vaguely understandable

Maxx,

If you like softer feedback forces, you may go further.
I use my Ferrari FF with these settings:
in control panel:
Overall: 80%
Spring: 0%
Damper: 0%
Default: 0%

and in core.ini:
force_feedback_damping = 100.0
force_feedback_latency = 0.03
max_steering_torque = 600.0

I've also used overall setting between 60% and 80%.
