OT : Vancouver - places to stay / stuff to do

Well, a few years ago the Vancouver team lost the Stanley Cup (the
championship, basically, for hockey), so the city residents thought it best
to riot and loot and pillage the city.  My friend in Isreal watched it on
CNN!  (It's not often our little city does anything to warrant attention
from anyone).  So if you time it just right, you never know, you might get
lucky!

The Century Plaza hotel is downtown just blocks away from Robson Street
(Vancouver's equivalent to Rodeo Drive).  In addition, it's a short bus
ride to Canada Place (a very impressive-looking hotel complex on the
waterfront), Gastown (think of it as "Old Vancouver"), Granville Island
(a public market on an island in the middle of the city), Yaletown (a
very trendy area that contains decades-old warehouses that have been
converted to condos, shops, and restaurants), Stanley Park (a 1000
acre park--in the middle of the city)... in short, the hotel is close to
much of what a visitor to Vancouver might want to see.

By the way, the Century Plaza Hotel can be reached at (800) 663-1818.

Also, it might be worthwhile to visit the Tourism Vancouver web site.
Its URL is <http://www.tourism-vancouver.org>.

Hey, I've lived in Vancouver for 30 years and I've been skiing only once!
I do, however, play hockey (or "ice hockey" for the uninitiated).
Anyway, there isn't any snow yet on Grouse or any of the local mountains.
You'd have to wait until Christmas time or afterwards.  Whistler,
however, is a different matter.

Have fun while you're here!

Cheers!

Thanks Joel!

I have booked my place - phoned them up on MSN :).  I felt very "star-trek"
:)

I am glad to see its close to everything!  I would also like to visit a
"mega-mall" when I am over, to get some cheap clothes (as we get completely
ripped off in the UK) - think i'll just come over in my shorts and t-shirt
and an empty suitcase ;)

What is the weather like in early March (6th-17th) by the way?  Is it
starting to get warm again?

All the best,
Thanks again!
Ash

Well, you'll be very close to Robson Street (about three blocks away), on
which you can find a variety of trendy stores like the Gap, etc.  As for
malls, you'll be only a few more blocks away from Pacific Centre Mall,
the largest mall in downtown Vancouver.

For the mega-malls, you have to go into the suburbs.  You could just jump
onto the Skytrain (our rapid transit elevated, driver-less train system)
and go directly to Metrotown, a huge mall not too far from downtown
Vancouver.

Vancouver doesn't really get all that cold (relatively speaking): we
don't often get snow in the winter, which in turn doesn't really last all
that long.  March is either rather wet or rather mild.  Either way,
temperatures during wet weather should be around 10 degrees Celsius;
temperatures during dry weather could get into the mid ***s.

Cheers!

Hello,

Yes, Vancouver rocks!  On top of that, the ACT LABS head office is
located minutes from the airport in Richmond.  If you have time and
are interested, I might be able to arrange a tour of our facilities.
:)

As a matter of fact, my children's daycare giver is from N. Ireland, and
she says that the weather is similar; she does say, however, that it
rains a bit more in N. Ireland.

Cheers!

oops, I totally forgot a major tourist attraction... one you probably
wouldn't find on a tourism Vancouver website.  The dope!  Some of the best
in the world is grown here, and you can smoke it in a cafe (well, one or two
cafes).  They don't call it Vansterdam for nothin'!
