OT : Vancouver - places to stay / stuff to do

Hi Folks,

Forgive me for the off-topic post, but I knew you guys would help me out :).
At least it isnt a head-mashing physics thread!!  I have managed to book a
cheap flight with BA to Vancouver.  I cant wait!!!

Can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay, nothing too fancy, but still
"homely" around the vancouver area, on the outskirts would be fine I think.
We are intending on hiring a car.  Something like a family run guesthouse
would be ideal.

Also, what are the things you *need* to do while you are in vancouver - what
are the main sites and attractions?  Is there anything you guys can
recommend.  I would maybe like to go ski-ing, haven't tried that before :).

Thanks for the help folks,

All the best,
Ash

Have fun Ash...Vancouver is an Absolutely stunning piece of real-estate.
It's been years since I've been there, but take a Ferry somewhere, anywhere,
the Puget Sound is quite scenic.  Grouse Mountain was the ski hill, they
have a tramcar to the summit.  Great views even if you don't ski.

There are lots of decent motels in the Richmond area, as that area serves
the airport. Like most cities, the downtown hotels are the most expensive
but the benefit is you can just wander around downtown from your room
instead of trying to find parking. There are also some very scary hotels in
the bad part of downtown - if your travel agent gets you a $20/night hotel
right downtown you might want to consider bringing a gun <g>.

As for skiing, since it's your first time I wouldn't recommend going to
Whistler. It's a very long drive on a fairly scary road (if you've never
driven in BC mountains). Grouse Mountain is right next to Vancouver and is
aimed more at the beginner/casual skiier.

If you can get tickets, maybe take in a Vancouver Canucks hockey game. What
could be more Canadian than that? Besides that, Van Dusen Gardens is very
pretty on a nice day, the Pacific Science Centre is cool if you're into
that, and there are always art galleries and such. And Stanley Park is a
nice place to go for a wander.

Is there enough snow on Grouse this time of year?

Eep, good point. Hey Ash, don't try skiing Grouse for at least a month. Even
on rental skis...

And I should say that you could consider an overnight trip to Whistler.
There's lots to see up there and with the recent world events, you might be
able to find reasonably-priced accomodation. Usually this time of year
they'll just laugh if you try to find a room but you could get lucky. Lots
to see in Whistler, just don't try to do it in one day unless you like
driving scary roads with idiots in a hurry.

Also don't miss the view of the city from the road up Cypress Mountain.
Granville Island Market is nice, little shops and stuff.  Robson street is
there is you like spending *** amounts of cash on clothes, etc.

Lynn Canyon Park is a good place for a little hike though it may be a bit
too wet this time of year.

Depending on how much time you have, take the ferry to Victoria and spend a
few days there.  It's a great city (OK, I'm biased... I live there), not too
busy - totally different from the hectic-ness of Vancouver.  There are many
B&Bs over here.  We kinda play up our British connection but really the city
isn't that British - unless you're a Yank :-)  Victoria isn't as active as
Vancouver if you're into shopping/clubbing/etc. but I like it.

Here's a panorama I shot of the main part of Victoria:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

If you come to Victoria there's a really nice B&B not far from downtown.  My
wife's parents stayed there... I'll have to ask what the name was.

More important, if you come to Victoria bring your PC and your wheel and
you, me and Dale can have a little GPL LAN party <g>

The most important thing is to bring a REALLY BIG UMBRELLA as it's monsoon
season here, but being from Ireland I guess that won't be much of an adjustment
for you ;-)  There are three local ski mountains, Grouse, Cypress, and Seymour,
all good for beginners. There was lots of fresh snow on the mountains a couple
days ago but it could all easily be washed away today, it's a bit early.
Fellow gpl/ras guy Joachim Blum found a nice B&B when he was here a few months
ago, maybe chat with him about it(find his email address on GPLRank). Give me a
call when you in town and I'll take you down to the local pub.  Don

Yep, the Victoria sidetrip would be highly recommended.  I'm going to
Whistler this weekend and I've heard there is already a decent amount of
snow there.  Also, plenty of things to do at Whistler other than skiing.

Wife says it was called Holland House.  Very nice place (a bit pricey but
it's off-season now)

Hey Joachim, I'm still limping a bit, did some serious ligament damage. I
figured I'd better get rid of that bike(86 VFR750 Honda) as it apparently
didn't like me, and bought a new slower safer model(2001 CBR929RR). Make sense?
My wife certainly didn't think so ;-)

Tell her that because the tires are so much wider you're less likely to
tip over. That's quite the upgrade by the way. (I do like those 929's,
sure wish I could afford one.)

and just to add... when they say 'local mountains' they mean local.  I got
to the top of grouse from my place downtown in around 15 minutes (no
traffic).
It's hard to think of things to do here, cause when you live here, nothing
really seems worth traveling all the way here to see. :-)

Capilano suspension bridge:  on the way to grouse mountain, $7 or something.
Just a tiny foot-bridge across a big-assed gorge.  Can't remember if it's
worth seeing or not, but lots of people like to check it out.

F440 track, by the ferry terminal:  Not sure how they match up to bigger
city's go-karts, but if you rent the big fast car, it's fun, and you'll get
sore arms :-)

Whistler is definitely nice, second best ski resort on the continent I
believe.

And if it's not too rainy/freezing-assed-cold, a walk around the sea-wall is
always nice.. I think it's the largest uninterrupted sea-wall in the
country/continent/province/something or other...

Too bad it's not Wreck Beach season, we've got a great secluded *** beach
too!

I"m not much for touristy things, but that's all I can think of tourists
usually doing... I"m sure more people will be more helpful.
good luck!
