GPL Rally 2 finally comes to an end

by SS » Fri, 09 May 2003 22:59:43

Almost 4 long months after its start, GPL Rally 2 has finally come to an
end.  Congratulations to all the drivers who made it to the end and to Paul
Wintrip for coming out on top.  Jonathan Davis also amazed in the Ferrari as
did Michiel Pompert in the BRM.  Almost 200 drivers finished the 14-stage
event.  With very stiff competition and total driving times for the combined
stages adding up to over 45 minutes, I think that's an amazing retention
number -- a testament to the event organizers' skill and creativity.  I had
a great time, learned a lot, and was very happy to scrape out a top-20
finish.

Now I'm having fun tooling around in my Stratos Lancia (a little present
exclusively available to rally finishers -- see this RSC thread for
screenshots:

You can check out the final results here:

<snip>

Hear, hear. I got as far as SS12, which isn't so bad, I suppose, but
then - ahem - completely forgot about it for ten days. No, I don't know
how I did that, either! :-/

A 14-week long offline GPL hotlapping competition.  One stage per week and
one week to submit a time per stage.  Madcowie (one of the more prolific GPL
track makers out there) and a few others produced a new track for release
each Wednesday and racers would need to submit a time by the following
Wednesday.  Tracks were wild and varied, with snow and ice, big jumps,
offroad forays, indoor arenas and more.

There will likely be a Rally2Rank in the near future where anyone with a
sado-***ic bent can run all the rally tracks and try to "go negative"
ala GPLRank.

So -does that mean there is a rally conversion for GPL?

Just check out the links Richard, this is was the second one. People make a
bunch of fantasy tracks that have a wall across the startline, and you do
the quickest lap you can from a standing start. It's alot of fun, but sadly
too time consuming for many, including me.

Eh... A wall?   On the track itself? That mean we can't go race these
tracks later on then?   (Ok, anybody written a NoWall-patch yet?   ;)
