Asking that question here is like going into a Buddhist temple and asking if
Buddha was enlightened. But, of course, it is the very very best racing
simulation ever written for personal computers. Period. Worth $40 ? - most
definitely. Since buying it all my other racing games have been gathering
dust on the shelves. I was so in love with the game that bought it for my
brother-in-law for Christmas. I set it up for and was giving him a quick
tutorial on how to drive the cars. In typical fashion I lost the car and hit
the beginning of an armco rail at Monza side on between front and back wheel
with a sickening thud. We both winced. It looked and felt so realistic. No
other simulation can give you that depth of realism.
And then there's VROC for GPL online races where you can join in fields of
anything from 3 to 20 racers and have a wail of a time.
But bear 2 things in mind:
1) You need a Pentium II 233MHz or equivalent minimum to run it. You also
need either 3dfx or Rendition to run it from the box or someother extremely
fast graphics card like TNT if you're prepared to download the OpenGL fixes
from the Internet. Bear in mind that a P233 is only the minimum and it would
seem that a P333 with Voodoo2 is the only way to ensure reasonable frame
rates under all conditions.
2) It is hard - very hard. If you're not a "natural" then you can expect to
put in 10+ hours practice to get competitive. But it's worth the investment.
Cheers,
Paul
