Oh yeah. It will give you a huge challenge. Lots of frustration for a while
but very satisfying when you finally string together a few good laps. If you
can feel the physics handling difference from nfs3 to n2 to viper then go
several steps further for gpl.

Hey,
I have a question.  I own Viper Racing , Need For Speed 3, and
Nascar Racing 1999 Edition.  I play them all regularly and was wondering
if it was worth the $40+ for GPL?  Now I know what some of you will say,
"Yeah it is great go and pay the money for it."  But is it as "real" as

DEFINETLY..!  Ever since I got GPL, I hardly EVER touch my other racing games.
Just no comparison.....

Oh yea.  This is as close as ive been to actually driving a car in a sim.  You
can almost feel the car roll in the corners and the rear tires break loose
under fast acceleration. It definately worth the $40 if you either:   A) love
1967 GP cars or just racing in general   B.)Want a real *** sim with a
spectacular physics model.  A combination of both is great. I bought the game
WITHOUT trying the demo first and dont regret it a bit.  I am a diehard race
fan and praticulary love the 60s era.

My advice though is try the demo first.  You can get it from the Papy site:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
Many other racing sim sites have it as well.

The System Requirements are a bit high (minimum of a P 233  64RAM and a 3Dfx or
Rendition) if you want a decent FPS.  I have a PII and 96RAM but no 3d
enhancement and get only 17-23 FPS with most graphics on.  If you can run Viper
Racing at a good FPS though GPL will be quite good as well.  Hope this helps in
your decision.

There's absolutely no question about it, Grand
Prix Legends has TOTALLY redifined racing simulations.
Truly.   It's not just "my opinion".   It's a fact.   Anybody that
says any different doesn't know their *** from a hole
in the ground.   :)~

GPL is worth every single penny.    Buy it.   Buy it now.

BUT!   Be forewarned: GPL is very difficult to master.
It's gonna be pretty frustrating at first.   Hang in there!   Once
you get the hang of it, you'll be sooooooo hooked.

The only problem it that if you buy GPL, you propably won't play NFS3
and Nascar any more:-)

From my few weeks experience, I'd say that GPL is definitely worth it
_if you have the hardware_.  Up until last night I was playing GPL on a
P233 MMX with a 3dfx card - it was OK but the problem was that even in
practice you had to choose between having so little scenery that you
couldn't identify a braking point or having so much scenery that you
didn't get a managable frame rate.  Racing against the AI was a joke
even with only 6 other cars.

Finally got my machine upgraded - now it's a Celeron overclocked to
around 460MHz and it's a different experience.  The constant high-frame
rate means that the car handles consistently.  I can also race against
a full field.  Now I'm a pretty "ordinary" driver in these games (read
appallingly slow).  I get laps between 1:11 and 1:15 at the Glen - which
is pitiful since some people out there are getting 1:05s - but with a
full field there's such a spread of AI cars that you do feel you're
actually in a race - even if you're at the back of it.  And it really
does give a great thrill to spend a lap or two behind the AI and then
bring off a perfect pass "as planned".

It's certainly a game you've got to put a bit of work into though.  I
found something like TOCA to be much more instantly "fun".  The funny
thing is that, going back to TOCA it does seem entirely dead and
unresponsive.  I found myself checking the wheel set-ups because I
couldn't believe that I could just stamp the accelerator and brake and
the car would stay on track.

In short, GPL is worth it if you've got the hardware to run it and
the time and patience to get used to it.

I had a bit of a bad experience.. I had an old demo ages a go.. with my then
133 32mb ram and a monster 3d card.

It ran like a pig !!!!

But I am sure when I get my new 350+ speed machine (hopefully) It will run
better !!!!???????

Thanks

(Uhhh... Is this a trick question?)

Hell yes, it's worth $40.
It'll make your hair stand on end, for various reasons.   :-)

GPL Worth The $40?

by Paul Jone » Sat, 06 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Asking that question here is like going into a Buddhist temple and asking if
Buddha was enlightened. But, of course, it is the very very best racing
simulation ever written for personal computers. Period. Worth $40 ? - most
definitely. Since buying it all my other racing games have been gathering
dust on the shelves. I was so in love with the game that bought it for my
brother-in-law for Christmas. I set it up for and was giving him a quick
tutorial on how to drive the cars. In typical fashion I lost the car and hit
the beginning of an armco rail at Monza side on between front and back wheel
with a sickening thud. We both winced. It looked and felt so realistic. No
other simulation can give you that depth of realism.
And then there's VROC for GPL online races where you can join in fields of
anything from 3 to 20 racers and have a wail of a time.
But bear 2 things in mind:
1) You need a Pentium II 233MHz or equivalent minimum to run it. You also
need either 3dfx or Rendition to run it from the box or someother extremely
fast graphics card like TNT if you're prepared to download the OpenGL fixes
from the Internet. Bear in mind that a P233 is only the minimum and it would
seem that a P333 with Voodoo2 is the only way to ensure reasonable frame
rates under all conditions.
2) It is hard - very hard. If you're not a "natural" then you can expect to
put in 10+ hours practice to get competitive. But it's worth the investment.

Cheers,
Paul

GPL Worth The $40?

A faster machine makes a whole world of difference in GPL.
I think a good (30+) framerate in GPL is much more important
even than in, say, a flight sim.  GPL requires _extremely_precise_
input and quick, small corrections that are impossible without
a good frame rate.

Wow, *ONLY* 10 hours!!!! You really are an optimist?

I am an experienced sim racer (GP1, GP2 F1RS, Nascar 1 & 2, RAC Rally,
etc, etc) and I reckon 100 hours is an absolute minimum, I've probably
put in hundreds of hours already myself, and I'm still crap!!!!

However, it *is* still great fun and very entertaining though, even if
you are ***like me.......
