GP Manager - Inconsistencies?

by Paul L. Finnemor » Thu, 04 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Is anyone else as confused as I am about some aspects of F1GPM?

Specifically, why is it that even with an 'ace' designer, he will
recommend wing angles some twenty or so degrees lower than all the
other teams? Also, is it just me or is the wind tunnel a bit useless? I
can seem to make very large adjustments to the wing angles and the
reported speeds in the wind tunnel are unchanged.

And another thing! Why can't you contract an existing driver to come
back next season without replacing the whole contract? With the other
personnel, you can employ a guy and have the same guy lined up for next
year. Why can't this be done with the drivers?

Any other hints/tips/strategies/tactics welcome here or by e-mail.

Do you also find that the wing seems to make stuff all difference
during testing, when you can beat the lap record quite easily, but
once it comes to qualifying and the race, everyone else seems to be
able to leave you standing (often with lower spec cars).

Also right at the end of 2nd qualifying when I have been told the
session is over, cars still go round for  more laps, and then post
fastest times ie Forti's Jordan's and pacific's suddenly take pole
by 5 or 6 seconds.

Agreed, Adrian! What say you and I whip up a posse and go round to sort MicroProse out? It's
such a shame that an intrinsically great game is flawed by so many niggly and unnecessary bugs.
Here's hoping an update is on the way.

Well, yes. I don't know if I speak for everyone, but it seems to me that the gear ratios, like
so many other things in GPM, don't actually do a fat lot. First of all, the method for altering
the gear ratios is far from ideal. While the graphical sliders may look pretty, they are awkward
and inaccurate to use. The system used in F1GP was better, where you have a numerical as well as
graphical display of the ratios.

As to actually altering the ratios, it would appear that the only real benefits come from having
the right number of gears - the individual ratios don't appear to do much. Generally, I look at
the highest placed teams to see how many gears they are using for a forthcoming race, and set
mine to the same.

Having read this newsgroup for a little over a week now, it seems that many people feel as I do
that GPM had the potential of being a great sim, but is flawed by its ever-increasing array of
bugs, inaccuracies and quibbles. I've said it before and I'll say it again - here's hoping we
get a patch update ASAP!

We rally need a good discusion on all those things. Especially
with such a lousy manual.

I have stated some observations in another thread.

Adrian,

I realy admire your persistence with this program.  I would have lost
mine by now.  It seems to be rather like playing chess witha computer
that cheats.  What is the point?

Thanks for the info BTW.

Phil
