SOS '37 Demo Delay - My Thoughts

I quote (from Hasbro/Micropros)

"You will be able to download the Spirit of Speed 1937 playable demo from
here by 20th October 1999."

See it for yourself at http://www.racesimcentral.net/;Select the "Demo"
link.

My thoughts are, this is a pretty bold statement, and one that has made them
not look good because they missed the date.  Why do we have to go through
this with every SIM that comes out.  I'd like to think that developers are
smarter than this (because I am one).

How about this instead: "You will be able to download the Spirit of Speed
1937 playable demo from here some time in the last quarter of 1999."

At least then if they target for the beginning of the Quarter (Oct 1) then
they have themselves a 3 month buffer, and we (the SIM Community) don't
expect to see it until December, and when it actuall arrives on the shelf
some time in November, everyone's happy.

And who ever decided that a release date should be published.  Wouldn't it
be nice if one day we just walked into the local software store and went
"Hey... Spirit of Speed 1937... What's this?".  I know... the anticipation
of it coming is part of the hype.

Just me thinking out loud..

I have been checking out the site all day.... Still nothing showed up...
I am starting to wonder why I keep waiting for it... Graphics don't look
very special and it looks kinda arcadish. I hope I am wrong offcourse but
for me it looks like a 'GPL wanna be'....

Just me thinking out loud..

I was going to ignore this game like the plague. But I just looked at some
of the screen shots. Oval tracks? Cool. I always thought an old time sim
would be cool, those old beast would be a real challenge. I wonder if they
included any board tracks?
Oh well. The demo is still not here....
Does look like and arcade game.... reminds me of NFS, just with old
roadsters.

If you expect something like GPL, I'm sure you'll be in for a
disappointment. Indeed, it looks quite arcadish.
But it could be fun in ot's own right...

This is nothing nothing against you personally (just happened to read your
post last), but I am SO f#$%en sick of some people on this newsgroup
constantly saying everything other than GPL has to be an arcade game. I've
played GPL. It's a great sim. Great fun too. But it's nothing like being in
a real life 67 F1 car.

My thought is that they're just doing a demographic "hit test" to see how
many are hitting it and from where... could be their way of determining
where to/not to market the game.

How do you know it's not like a real life 67 F1 car David ? ;-)

What is it about SOS that looks arcadish?  It may turn out to be a shit game
and a shit simulator, or just a shit simulator, but from what little we can
see (screenshots and the marketing bumpf on the site), it as far from arcade
as you could get.  Why would anyone who wants an arcade racer waste their
time on all the details of recreating the old tracks and cars?

Not just you Andre, but the others, too--please explain why you think this
is arcadish.

Marc.

I think we are all just frustrated with having to wait for the demo
longer than expected (sort of like having your paycheck delayed at the
last minute).  Also, it seems like every time people get anxious about
a demo or release date not being met they begin to CONJECTURE about how
crappy it will be.
The point was made in this thread that it will not be GPL but it
might be fun anyway.  I'm spoiled by GPL, too, but agree.  Even Nascar3
is fun (in a retro way) after life with GPL.
It's sort of like life in the Army - hurry up and wait.........

Things come up.  Remember "GPAL later tonight"?  That was months ago.

But I too would rather they take the id software approach.  "You will be able
to download the demo when it's ready.".

Maybe now you/we understand why Papy never gives us any releasedates
anymore??

IMO, all the "race-info" at the top of every screenshoot look VERY
arcadish.... and the the gear-info and the speed-o-meter too...

I really dont like the text-dispaly at all and IMHO the "1/5" thing in the
middle does point towards a arcade-game I'm afraid...

*Please do* prove me  wrong...

Thanks David, for putting that into perspective.
No doubt you often wander out to your garage and fire up your 1967 BT24 for
a quick run to the shops?

Well you win the award for pointless post of the day.

Publishers post dates so that people are prepared for the release and
know when to go into stores to get their game. More importantly for most
publishers and developers it means the magazines and retail can get their
acts together. Can you imagine releasing a game without anyone knowing it
was out? I shudder to think how poorly it'd do.

It seems publishers can't win. They give a quarter and people say "That's
not accurate enough, they're obviously gonna slip a lot and are using
this to cover" and if they give a date and miss it by *two* days (so far)
they get meaningless drivel like this.

Why don't you adopt the form of not looking at release dates and being
surprised when games are released or just playing the sims you have and
picking up the new ones whenever.
