Second problem (the important one): I am racing. I go down pit road. I hit
the limiter button. I cross the line marking the entrance to pit road... oh,
no I don't. As soon as my car hits the line the game crashes out to desktop
with no errors or anything. Weird.

  That's a new one.  I've seen ctd's when loading a track.  but never once
everything got into place.  How many cars were on the track?  Could be too
many background tasks are sucking up the available memory. <just a guess
there>
