help needed with framerate in N2

by all.. » Thu, 16 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I recently bought a gateway 2000 Pent.Pro with 48 MBRam and a 3d Blaster that
I put in...i realize that a pro is not as fast as a Pent.200....i just want to
find out what kind of framerate that i am getting. Is there not a framerate
counter that comes with N2..i read somewhere in the manual that there was..but
I could never get it to work..can anyone else?..  i use the renddma command
from the N2 prompt to get into the game. Any suggestions?

Apparently, the manual went to press before the game was finished.
Therefore, there are some things printed in the manual that aren't in
the finished product.  This is one of those things.

I have a Gateway PPro as well; the PPro is actually faster than a P200
in windows operations, but runs a bit slower in DOS.  I have found that
at any track in the game, without using rendition, I can run easily with
28 cars drawn ahead and every texture turned on (even Martinsville).  I
run it in DOS (shut down win95 completely first).

What is this FASTVID and where can I get it?  I have heard it
mentioned before but never looked into it.  Will it help a Pentium
(non pro) with an ET6000 type card?

BTW everything I have seen, demos, benchmarks, etc. would indicate
that the standard Pentium is indeed faster than all others,(MMX, Pro,
and Klamath) for 16 bit applications only.  It seems to be a tradeoff.
Anything done to improve 32 bit performance so far has cost some 16
bit performance.

It is only for a Pentium Pro. To find it, search the web for it like
everyone else :-)

No way. An MMX with the larger cache would be faster. The PPro is faster
with FASTVID, as certain "instructions" get turned on...

want to

You realize wrong. Try FASTVID.

command

It does not work. But if you use FASTVID it will be irrellevant anyway :-)

My understanding is that FASTVID will not work with the Rendition version -
is this not true ?  Eric ?  The Pentium Pro as I understand it is a bit
slower doing I/O - but this should not be a problem for N2 since 99% of the
workload is computation and memory access - where the Pro is actually
faster.  You will probably not get 30fps with all cars drawn and all
details.  Just draw 12 ahead and enable most graphics and go race at Dover.
You should get 30fps here - since I do on my P200 using a Rendition card
in dma mode (benched at 75.8 mbps).  If you do not - something is wrong
with your motherboards setup or configuration in general.
Good luck.  /THansen
