I present myself, I am an old, also from born in 1970, spanish driver, fan
and sometimes event organizer of the now obsolete GP2. Dont get me wrong,
GP2 is a great game and the first one that could be called F1 Race
Simulator, but I also think that it has been surpassed by GPL (but only by
GPL) by far.
As many others I tested GPL some time ago, liked it but found it too
difficult for a GP2 keyboard driver with a poor P166. Time has passed, GP2
has developed in a great why thanks to many people as Steve Young, Paul Hoad
and many others (GP2 and Track editors, for you only-gpl people). I have now
a decent AMD K6III 400 + Banshee + TM wheel so I bought GPL from the cheap
software section. What a great difference! GPL is inndeed great, but I will
stop telling you this because it is nothing new. I downloaded patches and
setups from the net, and recently I give Dave Noonan his well earned money
for the Track converter. As I only have ICR2+Indy and Nascar1999 I "only"
have 40 tracks to choose from, but I am looking for Nascar3 and NL only to
convert the tracks.
My race experience with GPL starts with a sub-2m lap at Mosport in a
computer fair competition. That best lap of the day gave me a GPL T-shirt
(that I keep as my first and oly racing trophy) and a place in the final
race (I do not want to talk about that race, there I learnt that the blue
flags really mean "you're pathetic!") Of course I have improved a lot since
then, but as my AI cars also have improved, I was ashamed to say that my
best positions have been 11th in the grid and 13th in the race. A slow guy
like me does not have the right to speak here. Yesterday I deleted my
player.sts file (please don't call it cheating) and downloaded some new oval
setups (I am more setup-illiterate like Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder) and
the results are now great. I am now 5th in the grid at Indy and was in the
first row (second) at Milwaukee where only the accidents kept me out from my
first win. In the old tracks I have also improved, 1:32 at Monza, but only
10:03 at Nurburgring in trafic (I don't have two much time/patience to get
another halfhour to test it, but I will be sioon in the 9:30 world.
As I said, I am close to my first win and I want to be prepared. I have
some other doubts and I would like to be enlighted by you:
- Are there any good (at least driveable) setups for the ovals? (Oops, I
have just seen Her Highness Alison Hine X-files, I am downloading them now)
- How I change my picture in the newspaper. this is really urgent!
- How I paint my name in the car? I think it was already answered. My
evolution has been Ferrari, Lotus, obviously back to Ferrari, Brabham and
Eagle for my american oval experience.
- How I get the Rendition tracks if I don't have the Rendition ICR2 version?
Additionally, how do I graphically improve the other ICR2 tracks, I tried to
follow Alison's notes but I just don't get it. What I am doing wrong?
- How do I install Snetterton in my season? Yes, I am really stupid.
- I tried to cheat the converter by getting Pocono and Sears Point from
N1999 as if they were from N3. I of course failed. Do I really need N3 for
it, right?
- And finally, how do I get into VROC? I get into the chat but I can't enter
any race. Any spanish speaking could lead me to the race? Will my single
ISDN connection be enough fast?
- We have only 4 1/2 completely new tracks, Dubai, Brands Hatch,
Osterreichring, Snetterton (not for me) and semi-new Flatstead that I cannot
see also. Do you think that there will be a GPL track editor as there is in
GP2? We have two of the greatest tracks of all times, Indy and Nurburgring,
but I miss some others like banked Monza, Le Mans and my hometown Toledo
track, a 6km killer mix bew*** Monaco and Bathurst, something like this:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
drive my Ferrari in that track in an online race? With GP3 maybe?
- Will I ever stop asking?
Thanks all for your patience and congratulations to Bruce Kennewell ("the
man who shot Manfred von Richtoffen") for been 83 all these years :-) I hope
to meet some of you in Sydney ("sidnee" here) in September!
