Joystick recommendations?

I'm not a rich guy but just a simple college guy.  However, I'm looking
for a better controller device for F1GP instead of the keyboard.  I have seen
in a magazine of a driver controller that you mount the mouse on the back and
you have a real steering wheel to steer.  It's only 40 bucks or so, which is
very decent pricing in my opinion.  However, I want to know how it works and
how reliable it is on F1GP and IndyCar.  DO you have a controller for under 50
bucks that is much better than that?

In my dreams, I thought about buying a rotary Potentiometer  with
a  click  on the centre position, and using that for  my  steering
wheel.  It shouldnt be too hard to connect that up to a  joystick
and  then you would have finger tip sensitivity for  making  very
slight overtaking moves at 180 MPH!

Can anyone (Electrical Geniuses?) tell me what I want to ask  for
when I go into Radio Shack or Tandy's please?

Somewhat off topic...

I bought a CH Virtual Pilot flight yoke in the interests of getting a
steering wheel-like feel. I would not reccomend it; I think that the
V.P. is best for slower flight games, like a Cessna Simulator (as
opposed to a warplane simulator).

On the other hand, if you're into slow steering-type games, then go
for it. It's just not what I had in mind.
