Port settings (8-n-1)

    I'm no Modem expert, and even less of an expert on Port setting for
the modem.  If I remember right, 8-n-1 is...

    8 = data bits
    n = non parity
    1 = 1 stop bit

    What would be the benifit, or downfall, of setting the to some other
values for online racing?

    You're right about the meaning.
    8 bits fits nicely in half a register.  Anything smaller can start
requiring overhead in order to "reconstruct" the data at the other end.
7-E-1 is another somewhat popular choice, but that used almost exclusively
(in my experience) with mainframe (or TTY) connections.
    Stay with 8N1 whenever possible.
