GPL hosting from my office PC??

by Jarno van de Breevaart Bravenboe » Sat, 08 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi all,

Last week I setup my work PC with PCAnywhere and am now able to control
the work-PC from my home-PC. However when trying to host a race it
doesn't show up in spyboy or on the internet vroc race list. This might
have something to do with the absence of an ip-adress when i'm in the
multiplayer screen. When I select host it only gives my three
possiblities to accept connection, namely:
IPX-node (numers) and two com-ports that are not connected to anyting
anyway.

Is it correct that when selcting the IPX-node none can join?? How can I
get the IP adress into GPL-multiplayer screen??? (btw, I know what the
IP-adress is and it's a static one to)

Anyone any suggestions please???

You have to use TCP/IP to use GPL online. If your office computer is only
configured with the IPX protocol, you will only be able to select this on
the multiplayer GPL screen. If you use IPX ONLY at work, you will have
troubles getting things to work, since your network boxes at work don't
necessesarily route IP-packages.

If your network route IP packages, and your computer is configured with an
IP-number, then you will certainly be able to use your 'puter for GPL
hosting.

TCP/IP is the protocol for internet traffic, IPX is a protocol for LANs.
When you have the host configured for IPX, only computers on the LAN can
see your host.

I have an IP number

Maybe the problem is in the routing. When I run Winipcfg the IP-routing
checkbox isn't enabled. Problem is I can't check the box from within winipcfg.
Any suggestions how to enable IP-routing??

I mean, I can use TCP/IP to connect from home to the office using pcanywhere
(i.e. I fill in the IP adress from the work puter at home and my home compu
searches, finds and connects through that IP-adress!!

Hope anyone can help,

Jarno

Yes.  The IPX protocol does not work over the Internet.

Extract the attached file into your GPL folder (if you already have a
file named core.ini, just add the contents of this file to your
existing file).  It tells GPL to use a different method to find your
machine's IP address than its default method.  This will more than
likely cause your IP address to be listed on GPL's multiplayer screens.

Jarno,

Not sure what your net configuration at work looks like, but you might want
to try adding the following line under the [Communications] section of your
core.ini:

alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1

See if that gets the TCP/IP choice to appear for you.

Luck,

Sorry to butt-in on this thread, but I've been trying to do the same thing
with V8 of PC Anywhere and been running into a big problem.  When I start
GPL on the office PC, the PC Anywhere screen on my home pc goes completely
black (no display).  I know GPL is running because I can click the lower
left corner (where the red flag is) and exit back to the desktop of the
office pc.  I've tried every combination of matching resolutions and
color depths but the problem is still there.  Just a black PC Anywhere
window whenever GPL starts.  Any ideas?

Yes. It sounds very much like you have GPL running on a Voodoo or Voodoo2 on
your office machine. You'll need to switch GPL to software rendering mode
before you'll be able to use PC Anywhere to remotely control it from home.
Apparently, PC anywhere only transmits the contents of the framebuffer of the
Primary display adapter, so anything running on a Voodoo or Voodoo2 won't show
on the remote screen.

The other thing to check is that the PC Anywhere host machine is running in
video compatibility mode. To set that, start PC Anywhere on the host machine,
go to "Application Options" in the File menu, then hit the "Host Operation"
tab, and choose "Compatibility" from the video mode drop down list.

Let me know if this doesn't get it working for you... the more people that
start remotely hosting on high bandwidth work machines, the more quality races
we have available...
