Trans-Am - Mike Gagliardo Killed in Mosport Crash

Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, May 20 - Trans-Am Series driver Mike Gagliardo
has died as the result of a crash involving him and Gary Longo on the 38th
lap of the Trans-Am 125 at Mosport International Raceway today.

Gagliardo was transported to Lakeridge Health Center in Bowmanville
following the accident, which caused the race to be red-flagged for 40min.

Gagliardo, who was driving the No. 29 Agri Oils Chevrolet Corvette, was
pronounced dead on arrival.

Longo, driver of the No. 53 Wickes Lumber/Trilithic Panoz Esperante, was
airlifted to Sunnybrook Medical Center in Toronto. He was conscious and
alert, but is listed in critical condition.

We'll provide more details as soon as they are available. - John Gardner,

Wow, I'd never expect anyone to die in a Trans-Am race.  The cars I've seen
in crashes always seemed to break up and dissipate a lot of energy thus
protecting the driver.  Wasn't Mosport closed for a number of years because
it was "too dangerous"?

A couple of my instructors at Skip Barber Racing school were looking for a
ride in this years Trans-Am series.  Unfortunately I don't remember their
names.

That was a direct hit on what looked like the drivers side of the car on
the fastest part of the track (right before the hump).  The back end of the
car looked like it was totally detached from the front except for something
on the right side of his car.
The only thing that might have helped was if the driver was in the
center of the car instead of the left side.  Even then it probably wouldn't
be survivable.  I remember reading that Mosport is the only track in GPL
that was relatively unchanged since '67.  Maybe this is why it's the only
one left.
We have way to many of these conversations.  Sad stuff seeing them
interview his friends, crying in the car waiting for the restart.

I just got back from that race at Mosport. It is a sad thing indead and my
condolences go to the families. My prayers go to Gary Longo who is listed in
critical.

Mosport was not to blame at all in the accident. Actually Mosport is MUCH
safer now. The racing this weekend was amazing to say the least, it's just
too sad it had to end on this note. :(
It was just a freak accident. The guy went spinning off after bumping with
someone and then backed onto the track right in the way of another car which
was going full out. Since turn 1 is a blind corner it would be impossible to
see the car ahead until the last second and since it happened so fast the
marshals couldn't put out the yellow in time.

I wasn't blaming the track.  I simply thought it was closed for awhile
because it was dangerous.  I know that there were modifications made a few
years ago to increase safety.  Accidents happen, people die.  It's a shame,
but also part of the allure of the sport.

I was watching the race today and what I saw of the accident was just
horrifying.  I was pulling for Mike because he came from the S2000 ranks and
that is what I primarily raced in the SCCA.

Very sad indeed  =(

Nope it has never been closed that I know of. I think Trans-Am has been
running there every year for a long time, maybe 20-30 years.

What's the next *big* race at Mosport? Never been there and would like
to go sometime. Prefer GT class if possible.

Yep, American Lemans. That weekend there are other support races as well
such as the Canadian GT Challenge Cup. CGTCC runs just about anything, it's
almost like CAN-AM. You'll see anything from a LMP, Winston Cup car,
Trans-Am, CASCAR to stock vette's and homemade cars all racing either other.

If you go walk down to Moss corner and your jaw will drop when you see the
elevation changes and banking. :) No TV or simulations give it justice.

OK, thx. I'll go to the Lemans race in August for sure, but was also
considering the CASCAR in June. Never seen CASCAR before, are they as
fast as Nascar?

They would be pretty close on Mosport since they(CASCAR) weigh almost a
1000lbs less but also have 450 or so horsepower.  A Cup car would eat them
up on the straights but a CASCAR would get them in the turns and under
braking. Guess it would depend on the driver.
A Cup car would probably be a little faster though.

Thx, will give Cascar some serious consideration then.
