   I had WMP running in the past, something got corrupted and I re-
installed v9.0 for Win98se.  But for some reason, I have several problems.  
First there is no sound....Real player works fine, but WMP is silent.  
Next, almost every file needs a codec dloaded or I get an error message
saying that the class is not registered....even files  that are default WMP
files won't play like .wmv files or .avi files.  Some play the video but
only after downloading a codec.  What setting have I missed?
  I first tried a straight download and install and that didn't work, then
I used the add/remove utility and un-installed WMP9.  The next attempt was
via the Windows Update route...same results...some files don't play or
aren't recognized and even the ones that do show video still have no sound.

Not sure if this will help but a lot of game trailers I have downloaded
use the DIVX codec.  When you run these in WMP9 without the codec
installed, it keeps trying to download codecs and failing.  (www.divx.com)
