Is Windows Media player shutting down?

by Dave Henri » Mon, 30 Dec 2002 12:29:58

Since I've been running GTR so much lately, I seem to have a problem with
WMP Not shutting down properly.  This is causing problems when I try and
shut off the system and/or when Enditall2 tries to turn it off.  I've had a
bunch of hangs lately when exiting windows and almost always it's because
WMP is not 100% shut down.
I have the latest patches from MS but they don't address this problem.
Most times I can clear it with ctrl alt delete, but unless I do that, there
is no clear indication that the WMP is still running.(no icons, no taskbar
box etc)
   Anyone else seen this?

What OS Dave? And what version of Media player? I have XP PRO with SP1 and
all other Windows updates installed and have no problems with it .Also
running Windows Media 9 series (I know it's beta but I have no problems and
it has some cool new features---http://windowsmedia.com/9series/home.asp) I
am also using Enditall2.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

GTR gets better and better the more I play and learn.

I'm having the same problem. I thought it was from downloading some codecs
that were conflicting with WMP. I had WMP 9 and went back to 7.1 thinking
maybe the beta was the problem.
I make videos for my league and use WMP alot to view finished products. I
finally disabled all extensions except .wmv and it doesn't lock or not
shutdown properly anymore.
Sorry I couldn't help except to let you know your not the only one having
that problem.

Found this on Google...
If you have Windows Media Player 7 installed, you could try going to
Add/Remove programs and remove the Adaptec CD-burning plugin component...
This can cause standy/shutdown probs.

And this...
I am running w2000. however, i had a similar problem. I uninstalled the
adaptec cd-burner add-on from the windows media player and my 4150b will
shutdown properly. Hope that helps .

And this...
If you are running Win98SE, have you tried installing the "Win98 Shutdown
Patch" from Microsoft? This was their fix for PC's and laptops not shutting
down. Microsoft also recommends reinstalling this patch whenever you load
new software. I hope this works for you as it did me. Go to Microsofts
website and search for the patch under support\downloads section.

yeah, I know.  It's one of those things I 'plan' to do.  I bought locally
last year(BIG mistake)  and I'm not really happy with the ddr memory I have.
The MadOnion PC benchmark puts it as SLOWER than SDRam.
But as to memory amount...for Win98....this is what I've heard.
From 64 to 128 = big improvement
from 128 to 256 = moderate improvement
from 256 to 512  = a tiny improvement.
While 512 is better than 256, the increase in system performance is fairly
small.  The way I understand it,  Windows itself needs just about 100 mb of
memory to realize it's full potential.  Then you need extra memory for
whatever programs you have running.  So most programs can run at near
maximum efficiency with another 128 chunk of memory.  Then IF you have more
that just provide added clearance or headroom to avoid memory conflicts.
Of course there are some programs that are just HUGE memory hogs...but I
think in that case an XP enviroment would be better suited and, of course,
at least another half gig of ram :)
