Adding the 'Oval' track to Monza in GPL? Possible?

by Tony L » Tue, 26 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I've often marvelled at what is possible with the GPL track
engine. Many tracks have offshoots that are not accessible
due to fences etc.

Monza has an oval that shares the pit straight. From the looks
of things the oval is *there* but the fences block it off.

Maybe it's just the graphics engine but it looks like the
oval goes off into the distance and it *is* there.

Possible to remove the fences and do some oval action? :-)

Tony, this subject has been flogged to death here at least
once......prossibly more.  Or maybe it seemed like more because the thread
just meandered along like a small mountain stream for so long.
I think that the concensus of informed opinion at the time concluded that it
was not possible to simply "open the barrier" and speed off into the
distance, any more so than it is possible to move the barrels at the 'Ring
and use the short "pit loop" road rather than warming the tyres up via a
full lap!

And that's what they did in real life. Apparently they would use it a lot
to get the cars set up for the weather conditions before embarking on the
full lap. Its a pity we can't use it - partly to warm the tyres and
partly to avoid 8.5 wasted minutes doing a lap. Especially since that one
always seems to be my best lap:-)

Actually, both are possible Bruce if you have intense knowledge of TRK
editing.  It's very hard work (moving the whole Nurburgring start complex as
the "inside-only section of the track" object so you can loop the track in
two ways, kinda like Rouen you have a secondary road), and as for the Monza
Oval, it is possible.  Requires you to do a complete restructuration of the
track.dat.

It's not all there. The banking that you pass under doesn't
extend very far; turn the detail way down so that the
trees go away, and you'll see. Monza is a completely
different place on a slow Pentium- it looks like it's in the
middle of a plain, the only grandstand is on the home
stretch, and most of the banking is torn down. It could
be in Kansas.

I wonder how far the parts that link into the home stretch
really go - obviously, not too far, since they don't link
into the banking. But they certainly give the illusion.

Since the track editing would be pretty extensive, buying
Spirit of Speed 1937 is probably the easiest way.

What is it about the mix of oval and road circuit that is so
appealing? Is it everyone, or mostly Americans who grew
up with ovals? I, for one, enjoy road and street races more
on TV, but there's still nothing quite like a superspeedway.

I'm from the UK, but I'd still like to try Monza + oval. I think part of
it for me is reading how much drivers of the time hated it and found it
incredibly scary. And it's a "what-if" scenario, because the 3 litre F1
cars never raced on it.
