I've tried all the upgrades on the car & always get smoked.....also noticed
that the 2 tracks here -1970 era (Corsica & the other) are looking like a
lower FPS...everything is more jerky...any clues?

thanks

It seems to me that even with the upgrades the 914s are pretty closely
matched.  Maybe its due to the lower power output- strapping those
overcoolers and turbo packages on the 911 would give greater disparities in
those races.  But even so, I find the 914 races to be very enjoyable and
very winnable.  Just be sure to stay smooth and avoid accidents.  Even with
all the bumping and contact, I find that I can always win the 914 race if I
can just keep from crashing.

Wish I had some more concrete advice.

Keep practicing. If you're smooth through the corner they are very beatable.

Us the handbrake to turn, and keep that gas pedal down at all times, so you
wont lose to many RPM before exiting the corner.

I know it is "dirty" driving, but it rocks....not to be done in GPL
though....there is no handbrake   LOL

914s are indeed the hardest stage (although I also had some trouble
with the original 930 without upgrades the first time around). If
smoothness doesn't work for you, try nascar style. You don't need to
win, just be in the top 3, so figure out which ones finish ahead of
you, generally one or 2 guys (steele and ???), the rest are easier to
beat, and make sure you are at some point side by side with one of
those 2 when facing and obstruction, even if it involves some fender
bender to catch up. I've had good luck sending them into a wall, which
is not a bad thing to do to a 914 2.0 anyway (a 914/6 would have been
nice) ;-)  That said, second time I did evolution i had no problem, so
practice helps...

I agree -- for me, the 914 races are hotly-contested and very
enjoyable.  I can pretty much dominate every race in the 914 class,
though -- the Turbo 911 class is the one that kills me (I guess I'm
just faster than most of the AI players when you put us all in slow
cars <G>).  I never use the handbrake in the 914 -- lift-throttle
braking or gentle application of the brake pedal works wonders if you
drive SMOOTHLY through the turns.

Try these tuning tweaks on the 914 (I use similar chassis settings on
virtually all models):

Shocks Ride Height:  Lower 2 or 3 notches (move slider to the left)
Shocks Stiffness:  Accept default
Shocks Travel:  Lower 2 or 3 notches (move slider to the left)

Tire Pressure:  28 front and rear

All of this gives you more of a firm, responsive ride with better
traction.  I'm sure there are better setups that other people have
developed, but these basic "tweaks" seem to make things work a little
better for me.  The lower ride height makes the car more stable
overall, and the slightly-reduced shock travel firms things up for me
better than stiffening the shocks -- based on my experience with
Allison Hines' Ferrari setups for GPL, I've found that softer shocks
often work better than stiffer ones, and this seems to be true in NFSPU
(for me, anyway).  You might also want to offset the brake balance a
bit to the rear, too.

Hope this helps a bit.

I always upgrade the suspension, add a roll bar, and use slicks at the
very least.  Then I go for the exhaust upgrade, and then I go for any
engine upgrades.  I think I have done all of this on my in-game 914,
but I'm not sure -- it's definitely NOT a bone-stock 914, though.

Be smooth and outrun them in the turns.  The AI is slow in the turns
(it's not as exaggerated as SCGT, but they do seem to slow down quite a
bit), so take advantage of them there by being faster AND more smooth.
Also, the high-speed *** helps give you more speed in the straights
at the cost of even WORSE acceleration from a standing start.  Use that
speed to blow by the AI on the straights, and be smooth so you don't
run into things, because you won't have the acceleration to make up for
mistakes -- but the top-end speed is worth being smooth for.

It's the old addage, your symbolness: "If you go on the green, I'd like to
race you sometime."

Don't wait for the announcer to shout "GO!" to "GO!" <g>.... get the rythm
of the countdown (pretty easy, it's been the same for 5 games ;-)), rev it
big and bang it into gear WHILE the guy says go. You will find you're just
as quick off the mark as the AI, even without mods (I haven't bothered so
far).

Jan./liking the 944 best so far, although I shouldn't, I know.

Although I know I'm cheating myself of some speed, I always go for the close
gear transmission in those cars that its available for.  While I may not be
hitting the top speed possible, I really prefer the feel that the close
gears give.  Getting the power down through turns really seems easier for me
with this setup.  With my driving, car control is usually more important
than absolute speed- put me in a 911 turbo with a high speed *** and I'm
an accident waiting to happen.  :-)

Just slow down before corners, speed up when exiting, avoid crashes,
pick the best line you can, drive smoothly, and practise, i.e., be
familiar with the courses. Keep the car moving. Usually handbrake's not
necessary.

When you finished factory driver and evolution, you'd find NFS:PU's no
longer challenging. Can you imagine all other cars stop, just give up in
"quick race knock out" after a couple of laps?
