My connections have been MUCH improved in the last couple of weeks since I
limited my modem connection to 28.8K instead of the V.90 or X2 "56K"
connections. I think that this connection is much more stable, with fewer
packet retries that can cause delays and discos. Just because you don't
actually lose your ISP connection doesn't mean that you aren't experiencing
errors and retries between your modem and ISP.
Even though there is an option somewhere in the dial-up networking setup
dialogs that seems to have something to do with connect speed, the only real
way to limit it is to add a modem initialization string in the advanced
setup option box for your modem. Unless you have a really complete manual
for your modem, you will probably have to get this information from your
modem mfr tech support. For me, U.S. Robotics quickly answered my e-mail and
informed me that the string was something like "ATS32=96" which sets
internal modem register S32 to a value of 96. This setting is different from
one mfr to another and often from model to model. Anyway, you should look
into it if you have a 56K modem and are experiencing occasional disconnects.

I'm just about ready to have a go at online and I was checking out pings
and packet loss rates for some addresses of pals in Europe. Didn't look
too promising.
Do you get the same sort of problems connecting to UK hosts ?

Same thing happened to me, kind of. In the first race of the IGPS league
at Mexico City I got pole, fastest lap and was leading by 35 seconds
when my phone line dropped on the 19th of the 20 laps...
But I made up for it, winning round 2 by three-and-a-half-minutes :-)
Cheers!
