Virus software causes GPL disconnects

by Kevin Caldwel » Tue, 20 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I was having problems joining on-line GPL races with my new computer. I'd
tried everything I could think of to cure it, and in the end wiped my hard
drive and started over. That cured it in time for my league yesterday. I
re-loaded the rest of my normal software last night, and this morning I
could no longer join races again.

I immediately though of my virus software - McAfee VirusScan v4.0.2 for
Windows 95 and Windows 98 with Virus definitions 4.04021. I turned it all
off, and now I can join on-line races again. I have the same virus software
on another computer, and it can join without any problems, so I had not
suspected the virus software through all my trouble shooting.

If you are having trouble connecting, or staying connected to on-line GPL
races, it might be worth shutting off your virus software.

Virus software causes GPL disconnects

Hi all!
.....not only virus-software, close *every* program you have running before
playing GPL by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and ending all tasks until it shows
nothing but "Explorer" and "Systray".
Better even: Use regedit to check your registry in the folders "run", "run
once", "run services" and "run services once" for entries and remove them
all. Also remove all entries in your Auto-Start folder and use sysedit to
remove all entries under "run" and load". IMPORTANT: Before fiddling with
those 2 system-files, use ERU to make a backup of your current
system-config, and use ERU again to make a backup of your *new*
system-config. Then make a *cold* reboot to throw all that trash out of your
pc's memory and play!
You can now switch between your "normal pc" and your "GPL pc" by using ERD
at the DOS-prompt and restoring the appropriate configuration.

Hi Thom j. !
No need to be chicken as long as U use ERU *before* fiddling with your
system. Concerning your multi-config, it's basically *not* the same as you
have to do the changes manually, but ERU also saves your multi-config as it
saves msdos.sys as well, which contains your multi-config-menu. So, when you
cleaned up Registry and Auto-start, reboot, you still have your usual
choice, choose DOS-Prompt-Only, go to the folder to which U saved the 2
configs (e.g. C:\erd\my_ gpl_config), you should see (using "dir") all
backuped files as well as erd.exe, run erd.exe, choose "restore all" or
whatever (I have german version), reboot again and off you go to SpyBoy! :)
Maybe some helpful soul could write a nice batch-file and post it on R.A.S.
to automate all this, I'm too stupid and lazy for this......
