Sim Hardware Questions

Well, same old questions. But, as time goes on in computer land, the answers always change so I feel this thread is always justified. I am looking to the expertise of r.a.s. to help me make an informed decision without my actually being informed. :-) My first concern is GPL. After that I may buy Arena, and I hope that some day, someone produces another racing sim that I will want to buy.

I'm buying an Athlon 500. The price is right and I can swap it out for a 700 in 8 months or so, right? I'm firm on the processor. I won't own any other so there's no point in arguing the pros and cons of others.

That being so, I've just spent two hours at Toms Hardware guide trying to become enlightened. Not much success there. Am I right in thinking the Asus and Biostar are my best choices for m/boards? Is Biostar my only choice seeing that Asus has no support and Biostar has 1 more ISA? Are there problems with those two boards that would make a Gigabyte or something else better?

Cases. Is there a difference or should I save some money there?

I have 98m ram. 64 of it is PC100. Should I get another 64PC100? Or will I be OK with just 64? Windows 98 OS. (Somehow, after looking at that question in print, the answer seems painfully obvious.)

Last on my list is video card. The V3 3000 is in my price range. Is that still a goodie?

When reading this, one should get an idea of my budget. So please, no 1gig chip with 256ram advice... :-)

Thanks for any help,

I would say go for 128. I had 64 and just recently added 64 more and
frame rates have definately improved. This is with a P2-400

Definately. I have this card in my system. I recommend it

Hi mark,

Asus is under the gun from Intel to not produce Motherboards for the AMD chipsets. Intel has threatened to remove Pentium processor rights from the M-board manufacturer if they do advertise it. Therefore... it's the worst kept secret in the M-Board industry. Meaning... Asus DOES make a board to use the AMD chipset. Except it will come in a plain white box, generic manual, and will not be listed ANYWHERE on the Net as being in existence. So go down to your local puter store and ask for the Asus M-Board for the Athalon... they'll have it...

Personally I find this to be 100X the "Unfair business practise" Microsoft was slapped with. Intel are flexing their muscles and blatantly threatening the M-Board manufacturers to comply, or lose out. The only problem is... the M-Board manufacturers can really do anything about it. Pentium CPUs are still the highest selling CPUs on the market, and this court case could take years.... during which time Intel would have removed those same M-Board manfs. immediately.... which leaves them extremely short in the pocket book to even continue the litigation... or even continue business for that matter. I know I personally am boycotting Intel for the duration...

I would also suggest upgrading to the another 64 MB Ram. Rule of thumb... you can never have enough Ram.

Cases.... this is tied in with your videocard choice. Those V3000 run hotter than a tin roof in the Mohave Desert, and they REALLY need to be aspirated properly. You seem stuck on the voodoo, so I won't get into the GeForce256/Voodoo3/TNT2 Ultra  battle with yas.

Cheers,

Shumi

Very true.... They are about 10 minutes from where I live, and they have
some of the best cases I have ever seen. Slap your stuff in one of those
cases, and it's like they're in a mini-hurricane.

Cheers,

Shumi
