I'm running Win'95 as an OS, and have no problem dropping to MS-DOS mode to
play NASCAR (either by shortcut or direct drop). My problem is with the
speeds that I'm posting at Taladega, I have yet to break the 192 mph average
lap speed. Normally I would not consider this a problem but my friends are
consistently posting 198-204 mph for the same track with slower hardware.
I know you are going to tell me that I need to get the car set-up correctly,
I have copied their set-up very carefully and still can't break the barrier.
I know it can't be my line... I just set the track record for his copy, on his
machine, at just over 200 mph.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Do I need to boot with DOS
6.xx to get around the possible resource tie-ups of WIN'95?
I'm currently running a 486DX2-80 with 8 Mb, 240 Mb HD, SB AWE32 soundcard, 4x
CD-ROM, ATI Graphics Wonder video card.
Anny thoughts or ideas would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance,
Gordon
For lap averages closer to 200mphs, I think your buddies may be
cheating by removing their restrictor plates on the original version of
the game. Be happy with *consistent* speeds in the area of 192-193mph. My
fastest single lap was a little over 193.5, while my fastest lap under
racing conditions (with a draft) was a little over 195.

Removing the restrictor plate is not something you can see in the
setup, and any race line (as long as you keep off the wall) will net you
around a 200mph average. Watch your line very carefully!!! You can lose
lots of speed in turn one. It's not evident at Talladega, since you run
wide open the whole way around, but I finally beat the track record at
Darlington by .5mph using merely the "Ace" setup with heavy emphasis on
throttle position.
