Help with Imola Setup

by Michael St.Julie » Sun, 11 May 1997 04:00:00

Hi,

I got GP2 when it first came out.  But I hardly played it.  Now I've
started playing it again and realize what I've been missing.  Although it
has some things missing, I really like this game.  Its fun to play.

My problem is like any rookie.  I'm not good with making setups.  Right now
I'm in a Rookie Level Championship season.  I qualified 2nd at Brazil.
Only to find out that I need to change my qualifying setup somewhat for the
race.  Oh well...My Ferrari left the race with a suspension problem on lap
38.

Then I went onto qualify 7th at Pacific.   I was*** in there until a
brain fade through me off of the track and next thing you know I'm back to
20th position.  Then another brain fade and I messed up my wing and that
was it.

Now I'm at Imola.  I've got no problems getting speed out of the car and
can easily come close to 200mph.  But I need much better handling.  So I
slow the car down and get a little better handling.  But I'm stuck.  On a
bumpy track like Imola should I:

1.  Raise the ride height higher than the basic setup allows and soften the
springs and dampers.

2.  Lower the ride heights, use packers and soften dampers and such.  But
wouldn't that lessen the value of soft springs???

Oh well, as you can probably tell I know nothing of setups.  All  I could
get at Imola so far is a 1:32.245.  That's horrible and so far I'm
qualified 17th after Friday sessions.  Could anyone offer some suggestions
on what to do???  I do every now and then look at other setups to get
ideas.  But I don't use them because other people drive differently than I
...plus I use a joystick.  What I really want is to learn how to setup my
own car and put my own work into it than copying everyone elses.  But I
need some help.  Thanx in advance.

Hi Michael,

To be honest, you would probably do better by just sticking with the same
setup and concentrate on improving your driving - you may gain a second
or two by a better setup, but there's more than ten seconds to be gained
there by better driving!

Also, you don't say what driving aids (if any) you use. If you have
steering help on then you will need a setup with a much higher front wing
than rear since this is necessary to override the driving line that the
game wants you to take. If you drive with opposite lock on then you can
go for a fairly stiff, unbalanced setup since the game will correct most
minor mistakes and allow much more rapid changes of direction. If you
drive without any aids then you will need a very forgiving setup to cope
with the chicanes.

For general advice on setups, you could do much worse than check out the
John Wallace/Doug Arno guide written for Sim Racing News. Reading some
real world stuff like Carroll Smith's "Drive to Win" will also help.

Cheers,
Richard
