I'd like to know a little bit about this series.  The Subject line suggests
that this is some kind of a drivers school(?)  is that what this is?  If so
then I'd like to learn more about what you do.  Is there a web page available?

It sure would be a great big help to allot of us if there was some kind of
an Online drivers school available.

It's not a school of any sort, just a long practice and
long race session.

What kind of program would you like to see?

"Nail That Track" Training Race Series

Circuit de Monaco
02/27/99

Race Report

Ferrari driver Christer Andersson threw down the gauntlet in qualifying with
a time of 1:29.26. Yet no drivers were able to come within a half
second of Andersson's time. The two front rows were rounded out by Coventry
driver Rene Beitz (1:29.80), Lotus driver Stephan Beck (1:29.99), and
Andersson's Ferrari teammate Pierre Robitaille (1:31.24) in spots two
through four.

The race saw the streets of the tiny principality take its normal toll on
man and machine. After the normal attrition, the race settled into an
exciting battle for the top spot between Ferrari drivers Jonathan Blake,
Brett Reschke, and Andersson. Blake and Reschke had skillfully picked their
way through the carnage after starting from the ninth and eleventh spots on
the grid, respectively.

Blake escaped with the hard-fought victory, edging Andersson by a narrow
0.92 secs. at the line, with Reschke only 13.27 secs. back.

Jack, this stuff IS serious fun! I really like the informal way of
setting it up and such. And it's a blast. I am TERRIBLE at Monaco, but,
in the "Nail that Track" tradition, I will turn out many times in effort
to "Nail" it!

Dave...

That's awfully nice! It's positive feedback like yours that let's me know
that people are enjoying the series and keeps me motivated while I pound out
race reports and labor at the back of the field! I'm anxious to get more
feedback (both good and bad) and suggestions from others so that I can make
this series, and other series to follow, as enjoyable as possible.

"Nail That Track" practice starts tonight at 10:00pm EST (0300 GMT) with the
Monaco race at 11:00pm EST (0400 GMT). Hope to see the Toad there!

Thanks to you too, Dave, for all the nice contributions you make to this
newsgroup and for your excellent site! ( http://users.wi.net/~schwabe )

Thanks Jack... I've got to spend a bit more time my site soon. Probably
this week to add some things to it.

What I do REALLY like about your informal series is that I can pretty
much always know where I can find a good race... having the set time and
track makes things really consistent. Which is nice, considering that
you never know what you'll usually find in the open room at a given
time.

A second to D.S.'s comments, Jack.  Your races are BIG fun; the long distance
is great for chasing back after the inevitable indiscretion(s). :-)  I hadn't
turned a LAP in anger at Monaco before, but I've been trying to get it figured
so I can join this week's races.  So far I've managed to jump nearly halfway
down the hill to the chicane, and even made it through once or twice without
lifting.  The other times, though.........   You think a ten-inch ride height's
off-base?

Keep it up!

indiscretion(s).

Right! As the name of the series indicates, the distance and the
concentration of races really give drivers an opportunity to polish their
skills.

Well that's one approach, but I've chosen to *lower* my center of gravity by
attaching a 300 lb. skid plate to the bottom of my Ferrari. In addition to
the handling benefits of the lower CG, it really enhances the durability of
the machine in the face of all the curb straddling I do at Monaco. But, I
wonder, do you think it might have anything to do with my lousy times?

Thanks for your nice comments, Steve. Hope to see you tonight!

I haven't raced in your series - combination of not being quick enough
and poor ping times (due to my ISP I think) and bad timing (for me; -8
hours GMT) - but nevertheless I am really enjoying your race
descriptions.

Any chance of downloadable replays?

Keep up the good work.

"Nail That Track" Training Race Series

Circuit de Monaco
02/28/99

Race Report

Ferrari driver Mark Seery held the early pole with a time of 1:32.81.
Delight turned to dismay, however, when Greger Huttu displaced Seery on the
pole with an amazing *first* lap time of 1:31.78 in his nimble Coventry.
With still nearly 39 minutes remaining in practice, Huttu continued to amaze
the crowd as he thrashed the Coventry about the streets of the principality.
His second practice lap saw his time drop to 1:29.01, which alone would have
been sufficient to keep him on the pole. Unsatisfied, Huttu continued to
whittle away at his pole time until it dropped to 1:27.36 on lap 13. Lotus
driver Ken Eisler settled for second on the grid (1:29.77) with a
comfortable 1.27 sec. cushion separating him from Alan Coates, who sat third
in his Ferrari with a time of 1:31.04.

Qualifying times aside, when the green flag dropped, Eisler edged out Huttu
at the first turn at St. Dvote. As the field screamed up the narrow city
street to ***, the order was Eisler, Huttu, Coates, Lotus driver Viman
Eiland, and Seery. With Eisler at the front, Huttu harassed the Lotus
driver relentlessly, unable to find an opportunity to pass on the narrow,
twisting street circuit. Finally on the third lap, Huttu got his chance
when, under heaving braking and with his mirrors filled, Eisler got a little
sideways, smacked the Armco leading into the Gasworks Hairpin, and
ricocheted into the hay bales on the outside of the turn. Huttu and then
Coates slipped by on the inside, while Eisler recovered.

It became clear that Huttu had been held up when he lowered the race's
fast lap time from 1:31.40 to 1:28.53 in his first lap in the lead.
Positions 1-3 remained Huttu, Coates, and Eisler until lap 7 when Eisler
overcooked it, slid sideways into the barrier outside of Mirabeau, and
elected to retire. BRM-driver Karppa inherited the third spot, and the three
drivers at the front cruised to the podium in that order: Huttu, Coates,
Karppa.

In capturing the win, Huttu set a fast lap of 1:27.24, and lapped the
entire field. In the pits following the event, some discussion was overheard
about compensating Huttu for *not* appearing at the next race in the
series.

Really nice race report again. I would join the other races during the
week but unfortunately they're ran too late (early?) for me (GMT +2).
Anyway, I can join during the weekends. It's really nice that you run
1h practise session + a long race. I prefer these over the sprint
races.
Keep it up! :)

"Nail That Track" Training Race Series

Circuit de Monaco
Monday, March 1, 1999

Race Report

The drivers' respect for the streets of Monte Carlo was summed up in the
pits before the race when Lotus driver Steve Blankenship joked, "Good thing
I can swim...This place hates me." But, nonetheless, the action got off to a
furious start with Steve Eymann laying down a 1:28.25 in his Lotus on his
second lap, with still over 50 minutes remaining in practice. With that
time, Eymann grabbed the pole and never let go as he continued to slice away
at his time until, on his 21st lap, he recorded the time that put him in
front of the entire field by no less than 1.57 seconds. Eyman's Lotus
teammates, Steve Ryan (1:28.04) and Viman Eiland (1:28.18) battled for the
second spot on the grid, with Ryan edging Eiland by a scant 0.14 seconds.

At the green flag, Eymann bolted to the front and was chased through Sainte
Dvote by Eiland, Ferrari driver Jake Myers, Lotus driver Tom Greig,
Blankenship, and the balance of a surprisingly quick but orderly field.
While Eymann summoned up his street circuit talents to begin to pull away,
Eiland and Myers diced for the second spot.

Coming off of Portier in the second position, Eiland lost traction, allowing
Myers to slip his Ferrari past. But Eiland would have none of it. He
recovered quickly and by the Gasworks Hairpin at the end of the first lap,
he was once again in contact with Myers. And *contact* it was! The two came
together briefly as Eiland managed to snake through on the inside as they
rounded the hairpin side by side. But his advantage over Myers was for but
moments as the two came together a second time coming off the turn and Myers
regained the advantage again by the start/finish line.

Myers and Eiland would continue to battle savagely nose-to-tail for seven
laps, until the unlucky Eiland tangled with an ill-advised backmarker who
was struggling to find a gear while perpendicular to the line on the blind
side of Gasworks. The delay allowed Myers, who had just managed to squeeze
past the obstacle split seconds before, to pull away and Eiland was never
again able to make contact. Meanwhile pole-sitter Eymann cruised home to a
19.45 second margin of victory without incident, except for a tenth-lap
breathtaking spin coming off the chicane headed toward Tabac.

In the pits after the race, an exhausted Eymann graciously returned the many
compliments of his fellow drivers by commenting, "One of the most polite
group of drivers I have ever seen." In his spectacular effort, Eymann set
the fastest lap of the day (1:27.82) and set the fastest qualifying time of
the Monaco series with his 1:26.47.
