Played Arcade racing games last night and...

Hey Race Fans,
I finally went down to a video arcade, at the mall actually, for the
first time in about 10 years to check out the racing games.
I played this 'Monaco game and some others. (wish I wrote down the
names)
Anyhow, it was a whole different ballpark.  The graphics were very
well done. The quality is always touch and go at home,(and I've got a
pretty good system) At the arcade busy details were the norm. The
other big difference was that they had these sit down***pits, with
steering wheels that you had to fight with around each turn or so. If
you made a mistake and turned left and right too quickly, you'd be up
on the grass due to the g-force. I figured that the arcade games would
be easier, appealing to kids, but in some ways these were harder. I'm
used to games like ICR2 where precision is the key.  I'd say that any
dedicated auto simulator guy (or gal) owes it to themselves to go
check it out.
The only drawback was that it cost $0.75 for each game. What a rip
off. Otherwise I'd consider playing more often.
Let me know if anybody else has taken the same test drives, and if so
what games to look out for.

Well here in the UK you can expect to pay a pound per game.
  Expensive but worth it!

Play Sega Rally, Daytona, Sega Touring Car (relatively new), Manx TT (bike)
and maybe something like Ridge Racer,

They are all really fantastic games, each has its own set of attributes to master.
If you have more goes and find hook up ones to race against real people then
you will have one hell of a time.

Cheers, ian

Sega TOURING CAR?! Tell me more, please!

Don't venture forth into arcades much at all. Remember about a year ago,
there was an Indycar version. Forget which company produced it, but it
was cool. Only played it once, as the shifter wasn't working at all. It
was of the sit-down variety (the only really worthwhile experience)
without simulated G-forces. It had Indy as the only actual track, with a
few others to choose from. The***pit perspective was esspecially
rewarding, as was the depiction of ICs themselves. Should actually check
and see if it's still around.

OK well touring car is the latest and greatest sega game.
Sit down cabinet, thumping music and lots of speakers
to give the 'feel' of the engine. Usual up/down gear shift.
You get a choice of 4 cars, Merc,Opel Calibra, toyata celica, cant remember
 the other one!

Anyway you do 1 lap of qualifying seperate from all the other racers,
this gives you a grid pos for the main race.
Main race 1 is on the qualifying track, 2 laps, rolling start 8 cars
If you complete this in the time..
Race 2 is on a similar sort of kerbed race track, a few more bends
If you do this then its onto the walled street circuit, with some very
very tight bends, thats the last race, but I have not managed to complete
it yet, it is very difficult, usally a second short and havent rolled across the
line yet on the second lap.

The cars all handle very differently, I am getting used to the Calibra.
All the cars drift out big time on the corners, its a bit weird though as I
think its simulating power steering, so you have to be a bit rough with it.

The game is a real rush, and this lunchtime I was so so so so ...... close to
finishing the third race. Its very different in handling to both rally and
daytona, but its great once you start getting the feel for it.

Thats Sega's Indy 500, I have played it a few times but its fairly rare in the
UK. It was somewhere after Rally I think but before Manx TT, I did not get as
much enjoyment from indy 500 as I have from the other driving games

So it's more of a ITC/DTM representation?

This system sounds too cool. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it here yet,
and if it ain't at WEM it's certianly not going to be anywhere elce in
the city. Just have to wait.

If they have modeled the cars "correctly", then the Merc is RWD, the
Calibra is 4WD, the Celica (NOT a touring car) who knows, and the fourth
car could be an Alfa?

Yes, I've checked and it is Sega Indy 500. Have you seen another open
wheeler game? I think it was called Acer or along those lines. Forget the
company's name (shows how much I venture into arcades!) it was T___. I've
only seen the linked (4) version, and it looks a hoot. It seems that
there might only be one track, not sure. The cars themselves look like a
cross between Indycars and F1, most cars with rear kickups, and others
with airboxes. I believe too, that the cars perform differently. Hard to
tell, as whenever I see it it's in use so I can't "wait" for the intro
information screen!

Whoops I used the someone elses ID to post this, but I know who I am
Thats what I get for swapping machines!

Yep, it seems very much like DTM as opposed to the BTCC
The circuits are certainly not like any BTCC ones,.
Yep its was an Alfa, I rememberred just after posting the reply!
I think they have just put the Celica in because its the main car in sega rally
and it would attract peoples attention. The paintjob is pretty much the
same as the sega rally one.

There are a couple of open wheelers, I think its Ace Driver that you are talking
about. And there is always the now ageing Virtua Racer. I tend to prefer
open wheelers at home in a sim type environment, but in the arcades I
much prefer sliding cars around, and lots of contact with the opposition.
Taito? if not then it will be Namco.
Sega and NAmco always seem to have similar games but for me the Sega
ones have a little extra something.

You should pump those tyres up :-)
