Lads, I realise this is getting a little wearing, but you should try it from
my end...

Still having problems with certain, not all, games (add SBK2000 to the list
of not working ones..). Latest drivers for everything, not overcooking the
chip, etc, but still freezing. Can only press the reset button, can't even
exit to desktop. Now, is there a definitive site on the web that you know
about that could give me a list of possible suspects?

Driving me potty...

What game? System/video/soundcard config? Driver versions? DX Version?
Tried software mode?

Do you have a motherboard with a VIA chipset???
If so there is a known issue with, and I quote "fast AMD systems" , Windows
98 SE and the USB port causing the screen to go black and lock your
computer.

Although they won't admit it, the problem is with the VIA USB driver that
was shipped with Windows 98 SE.  You need to get the 4-in-1 drivers from
VIA.  www.via.com.tw

I scanned your other posts and can't find any mention of your motherboard
chipset so I apologize if this is a blind alley.  Your problems just sound
identical to the ones I had and this fixed it for me.

Cheers,
...Colin

Colin,

It would help if you describe your system, including the driver
version(s) you use. It also can help if you describe which problem(s)
in which game(s) you have.

You're absolutely right, Remco, and I'd already posted on the subject
before, but here's what's happening...

I've been posting about the problems I've had for some time. Most games run
fine, some don't. Here's the good/bad:
Good: N3, GPL, SCGT, Monaco, NL, etc
Bad: SBK, GP500, SBK2000
inbetween (crashes, but not as often): Toca 2, McRae

System: AMD K6 II 350, 128 Mb Ram, V3 2000 PCI, SB 1024...latest drivers on
everything (I can tell you motherboard as well, if you like)

What happens: Game completely freezes, sound loops in the background,
picture locks, and no way of escaping.

Do you happen to know what the first group of games have in common, but not
to the second group?

Doesn't those last 3 games (SBK, etc.) all use D3D, where the first
group uses 3DFX? Which DirectX version do you use?

Normally this behaviour is a sign of an overheated videocard. But,
since only a select group of games have this, I think you can rule
that out. May I suggest that you visit Eric Cote's site, he just
released a chronicle about IRQs. Maybe you'll find a solution there.

Also, try the original 3dFX drivers which came with the videocard,
just to check it that will make a difference.

Another thing you can check is in what PCI slot you put the video- and
cound card. Some cards don't like to be put in a certain PCI slot,
especially when those PCI slots shared IRQs, for example with an ESA
slot.

Good luck.

Ding, ding, ding.
We have a winner!
Read my reply to your original post, then look at IRQ 11 (again).
The USB Universal Host Controller supplied with Windows 98SE may not work
with your AMD.
Get the new one from www.via.com.tw (4 in 1 drivers)
If you already have, try disabling Creative SB16 emulation.  That's fixed
problems in the past.

Seems ok to me.

What DirectX version do you use?

DX7a, but I've had this problem since maybe a year ago (different s/c, v/c
then, and dx 5, I reckon..)

Well spotted! But does that explain the lockups in certain games?

Colin,

Check your direct X version, run the dxdiag.exe program (should find it in
the DixrectX folder).  I was crashing with all most everything until I found
that Direct X got corrupted with conflicting files from different versions.
As Microsoft support said "It appears that during an upgrade to Direct X
7.0, something happen and it didn't completely update.  Not all files from
different versions are compatible."  The only way I was able to fix this was
to remove all registry entries refering to DX 7.0, physically delete the
files and reload DX 6.1 and then reload DX 7.0.

I've tried that, too! All seems to be working well, except for this one
error message..

Registry: Errors found:
Key 'HKCR\CLSID\{92187326-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\InProcHandler32',
Value '', should be 'gchand.dll', but is ''."

But all tests working perfectly...

I'd also like to say that behind all the bickering and in-fighting that goes
on in here, there are some wonderful minds and willing helpers - I thank you
all.

Did you ever reinstall Window inbetween?
