I don't really see the point... it puts 4 more actions in a lap which you
have to pay attention to and can***up.

The trick to speed at Martinsville is carrying speed into the corners but
remaining in control and getting the power down early without the rear end
stepping out. Easier said than done though.

This has got to be the worst Marty setup I've ever driven.  Just got
through with some off-line practice and it is horrible.  It pushes
like a tank in the middle and unless you stomp on the gas off the
corner it will push right into the wall, and of course,  stomping on
it causes the back end to snap loose.  I had a great setup for N2002
and it is the only one I ever drove... very forgiving, very easy to
drive, and very fast.  I just can't get used to this one.

I turned a few fast laps with this setup but if I try to drive like
that on Sat. I will be spinning every other lap.

I'm sure Tim is turning 19's with it...

lol, i wish

The fastest i've seen is mid 20s, and that isn't me, yet :)  I did a 21.1 by myself, and some 20.9s drafting, but that's about it.
And trust me, you'll get very few opportunites to go that fast online (traffic).

I learned something about this track tonight in an OLR/FASCAR practice race...
If you have the option 'Boost steering at low speeds' turned on, try turning it off.
The car was much more stable for me and it didn't really adversely affect entering/leaving my pit stall.
I was able to run much more consistent laps, and up the linearity.
Apparently going that slow in a turn is like being on pit road for most tracks, who knows, but if I'm right, and it wasn't just me,
kinda amazing Papyrus would miss that.  If I am right, we'll see that same issue at the road courses.

Try it

you're right about the low speed steering.  turn it off.  I tried some laps
earlier in the week when the rascar threads started about marty.  the car
was getting snap oversteer through the corner.  then I rembered that I
turned it off in gpl for the tracks in GPL Rally2.  So I did some more laps
with it turned off.  more stable and predictable through the turns and my
laps were all mid to high 20's.
I was going to post  a message when I realised this, but been picking grapes
all week and simply forgot all about it until I read the thread.

turning it off.

Just a word of warning:

Remember my "hell" at Bristol - where I lost several laps trying to get
going again after a spin...
Well the problem was that whitout the 'steering boost' I couldnt manage to
turn the car around - there simply wasnt enough room! It took me ages trying
to spin the car around... Having suffered some engine damage - that was
almost impossible too... so I ended up doing a 3-point - well, actually it
was more like a 5 point - star turn...  Tok me ages and cost me atleast two
laps. :-(

Fair enough.. at Bristol i was running a steering lock of 25 and at
Martinsville the stock ratio is at 14... but nevertheless...

I strongly suggest testing this (i.e. turning the car around) before the
race tomorrow.

just tested it out.  does require a three point turn to turn around.  but if
your engine is good, just give it full lock, plenty of right boot, and dump
the clutch.

Not only that, but the random damage will probably take 3rd away from you
just for trying...

Well, I found it impossibe to get out of my pit stall without hitting
the car in front of me with low-speed steering turned off.

There's no point in racing if you can't get into/out of your pitstall
without hitting someone, so my low-speed steering will remain on...

What a stitch up... doesn't make one iota of difference either on or off as
far as I can tell. Tim is having a laugh at our expense. <g>

Martinville was my favourite track back in the N2/N3 days, but I couldn't
really get to grips with it come N4. Now with some 1200 laps between NR2002
and NR2003 I'm starting to feel at home again. Not quick by any means (21.6s
in NR2003), but I'm really looking forward to tomorrow.

Well, my best time so far is 21.216, but that musta been a freak lap.

20.960, but I had to go low into the turns, lower then the groove, and break hard.  I won't be doing any -21.2s in the race.  If you
can stay out of trouble, with all the cautions we'll have you might make it on fuel, tires will make it.
