If the performance problem were caused by background processes or
faulty drivers, then the game would always stutter. But when GPL
starts up, and for the first, say, 15 minutes, it runs very well.
Then it starts slowing down, getting worse the longer I play. Again,
downgrading to 98 fixed everything. It appears to me that ME has
exposed a memory or resource leak in the program. Although I didn't
have a reliable system performance program that would have confirmed
this, that's exactly how a leaky program behaves. In NT, killing the
offending program will always free the resources; but 9x/Me aren't very good
about cleaning up after sloppy programs. Interestingly, NFSPU (yes,
I have played it) didn't exhibit the problem.
