Has anyone had any problems running GPL under windows ME ? I upgrade my
computer today and though I would pull out the Hyperstimulator to give it a
thash.
Could not get the controls to work AHHHHH!
Tried it on my old machine no probs so it must have something to do with the
joystic drivers ? any ideas.

How does GPL run under a TNT card these days or should I put the old voodoo3
back in ?

GPL, WINME, TNT2 works fine, I upgraded to GEFORCE2MX 3 weeks ago and works
fine...

Yes, I posted the following on 4/29:

<old post>
I use ME for GPL and the longer I play the slower the game gets. It's not a
memory
or processor or GPU problem: >512 MB, 1.4 GHz P4, and GF2. Exiting and
restarting GPL does nothing. I have to reboot to clear out whatever it is
that's getting clogged. In addition, GPL has gotten slower and slower in
general over time. My HD has plenty of space and I regularly defragment.
Don't know what it is. I only know that I used to run at 1280x1024 with
every setting at max, and now can really only run at 1024x768 with mirror
detail set to Cars & Track. I've never heard anyone complain of these
problems with 98. I'm considering downgrading to 98.
<old post>

By 'slower', I mean the sound and gameplay stutter, sometimes slowing the
game to a halt. It's incredibly irritating. This morning I completed the
Me -> 98 downgrade. The game runs brilliantly now. I've been driving for a
couple of hours, and there's no stuttering, even at 1600x1200 with every
setting at the maximum.

I hope you selected the option for uninstalling Me.

Oh, damn. These are the exact symptoms I experienced last night for the
first time.

I have had the same stuttering problems with several different games
including NASCAR 4, GPL, and N3 while running under WinME.  I
increased my swap file to 250MB and this seemed to help a little.  I
think from Jeff's experience that it is a problem with WinME.

I don't know, these are two valuable services IMO, system restore can be a
life saver.
Just get "End it all" and use that before you start your games.
I'd suspect a graphics driver issue or other background program (like a
virus checker) that's causing the stuttering.

IMO, System restore and PC health don't typically trip up your system while
you're in a game.  Your mileage may vary.

If the performance problem were caused by background processes or
faulty drivers, then the game would always stutter. But when GPL
starts up, and for the first, say, 15 minutes, it runs very well.
Then it starts slowing down, getting worse the longer I play. Again,
downgrading to 98 fixed everything. It appears to me that ME has
exposed a memory or resource leak in the program. Although I didn't
have a reliable system performance program that would have confirmed
this, that's exactly how a leaky program behaves. In NT, killing the
offending program will always free the resources; but 9x/Me aren't very good
about cleaning up after sloppy programs. Interestingly, NFSPU (yes,
I have played it) didn't exhibit the problem.

Hard to say.  I'd suspect a third party driver before ME.   Your vid card
is?

I've had similar problems with WinME basically writing system backup files
of 50mb plus until the system partition is completely full (6 gb of it),
with the obvious resulting "grinding to a halt".  Disabling system restore
solves it for the most part, and I've found Win98SE (my only other available
"downgrade") to be even more unstable and crash prone so I've stuck with ME
anyway.

Hmm. Interesting. When I reformatted to install 98 my disk was awfully full
for a computer that was only 6 weeks old, and I recall it filling up very
quickly. Maybe that's what it was. Too late now.

I know for a fact it is system restore causing the stuttering on my PC (and
many others), I know because turning it off stopped the stuttering.
BTW, I don't have anything running in the background that isn't absolutely
needed.

I would stick with 98se if it works- I'd be using it now if it didn't give
me so much grief. Admittedly my PC is a mess of bits but ME is more tolerant
so I stick with it (performance is allegedly worse in ME).

If it aint broke don't fix it I suppose.

Reading a MS knowledge base article suggests turning off machine debug
manager (mdm.exe) both this and system restore can be shut off using
msconfig.  mdm makes a lot of temp files in the windows dir, which can also
fill up the drive.

None of which is very good for playing games at the end of the day.

cheers

You can adjust the PCHealth behavior so it's scheduled for off hours.  If
you don't play GPL all the time,
you can turn off system restore as needed via the System Properties in the
control panel.
Go into Performance, then File System, then Troubleshooting, check on
disable system restore.

Doesn't 98SE have a version of System Restore of some sort?

No.  Thank goodness.
