Nascar Frame Rate

by Nick Totor » Fri, 02 Aug 1996 04:00:00

<<I just bought a Packard Bell Pentium 150mhz with 24 meg RAM. The
frame rate in my CD-ROM version of Nascar is about 5 fps. That is with
only car textures and skids/paint turned on. The opponents are set to
11. Any more the frame rate drops. And I can only run 4 ahead, 2 behind,
and 1 heard, any more the frame rate will drop even more. If I swith to
VGA mode it only goes to about 7 fps. Please help!! Do I need a new
graphics card?>>

Yow! Man, you must be suffering from some pretty rude migraines
h-a-v-i-n-g t-o p-l-a-y- t-h-e g-a-m-e l-i-k-e t-h-i-s. Before anyone
makes suggestions concerning your card (heck, even a cheesy Cirrus Logic
card with 1mb DRAM could do better on a DX2 66) what card do you have
now? Are you playing from straight DOS? I may be barking up the wrong
tree though because your current hardware is more than enough to run the
game perfectly in SVGA.

Something is definately wrong here.  My setup is similar except for
166Mhz and Matrox card with 16Meg.  I can pull off 23FPS with everything
on in SVGA (full opponents).  The only way you could be getting that bad
a frame rate is if you have some sort of strange hardware conflict.  I
would start by trying different VESA drivers, disable joystick, disable
sound, etc. until I saw some Unbelievable frame rate increase.

says...

Some of the PB models don't have any Level-2 Cache.  This will cause
horrible performance in games.  make sure you DO have this cache.
If you don't see if you can get an upgrade.
