Aspyr: NASCAR Racing 2002 Season coming

December 4, 2002 10:50 am ET

Mac game publisher Aspyr Media today announced plans to bring NASCAR Racing
2002 Season to the Macintosh. The new game will be "co-published" by PC
publisher Sierra Entertainment Inc.

Developed for the Mac by Westlake Interactive, NASCAR Racing 2002 Season is
already in duplication, according to Aspyr -- it's something of a "stealth"
release, as the company hadn't mentioned until this morning plans to publish
the game. For folks who keep an eye on Westlake's Project Status Web page,
this project was listed as "The Finest Hour:" a convoluted reference to the
Winston Cup (by way of Winston Churchill's famous speech).

The game features teams, drivers, sponsors and every track of the 2002
NASCAR Cup Series. To get started, players can engage in driving lessons and
track tours narrated by NASCAR Cup Series Champion Darrell Waltrip.

System requirements for NASCAR Racing 2002 Season call for Mac OS X 10.1.5
or higher; G4/733MHz or G4/500MHz Dual Processor; 128MB RAM; Radeon,
GeForce2 MX or better video card with at least 16MB of VRAM; 8x CD-ROM.

Rated E for Everyone by the ESRB, the software will be on store shelves this
much. NASCAR Racing 2002 Season carries a suggested retail price of
US$49.95. (As MacCentral posted this article, Aspyr had not yet updated its
Web site with details on NASCAR Racing 2002 Season, but said it expected to

Larry, do you know if you can get FFB wheels for the Mac?

I'm not really sure to be honest...  Frankly, there hasn't been a game to
warrant one until now.

USB is USB.  Compatibility is only a driver away.  I predict Logitech will
come up with something.

The question I have is why go to the trouble to get Nr2002 working when the
2003 version will be out in 2 months. Why not just work toward getting that
support incorporated into that game. That way, those users could do
multiplayer with everyone else. That makes no sense to me ...

Or why bother at all.  Will the 5 sales be worth the effort :-)
Just curious, how many are actually running a sim on a Mac or plan too?

That wasn't the question :)
Do you game on the Mac much?

PhotoShop doesn't count as a game, Larry.   :)

I think I counted five of us on this NG a couple weeks ago. So your
sales projections are about right. ;-)

I, too, game on both platforms, but GPL's mah main squeeze.

I suspect they're doing 2K2, rather than 2K3 because the licensing is
cheaper for such a small market; but once they get it done, they may
find the market warrants porting of other titles. I would think there
are other Mac users out there who would look at a NASCAR sim, but not
open-wheel or sports car.

BTW my Momo FF works great on my Mac, but no FF. I didn't have to load
drivers or configure a joystick setting. I just plugged it in and fired
up Racer and the demo for F1 2K CS. On Racer I had to change a few lines
in some .ini files, as I recall.

Yeah, now we're talking. MacOS X seems to make a real difference for
porting projects.

Also means there now is a real Unix platform (beside Linux) that's also
good for games *and* can even run Office (dunno who'd want to since it's
bloatware, but there ya go).

Too bad it comes at a time when the original Papy team seems to have
broken up and...

..the system requirements are almost outrageously high in Mac terms. I'm
guessing a 400 to 600 MHz G3 iMac is more common... and these machines
aren't really upgradable.

Well I sure am, and I'd dump the PC in a second if it wasn't for GPL and
SCGT (and the odd bit of Super 1 Karting).

Too bad the system requirements are so high I'd sure wish they'd port
GPL instead - at least that should run a bit decent on a 450 MHz Mac w/OS X.

High sys reqs are part and parcel of the 'mac experience' (for modern
games a 64 meg vid card in a mini-tower is really a minimum req imho!).

Good news is that FF will be part of OS X 10.2.3 update (due before
Jan)! There are new kernel extensions which enable ForceFeedback on
Logitech devices and a kext with the ImmersionFFlibrary. Some FF Woo
Hoo (tm) for both NR2002 and F1 CS 2k!

My copy of F1 CS 2k arrived on tues (w. free copy of Oni-thanks
Feral!), works/looks great (MDD dual 1 gig, ATI 9000, yes it's a work
box and a lovely beast at that ). Grabbed the Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta
and Sebring tracks as well as Jakob de Haan's Spa updater from
http://www.bhmotorsports.com. No luck with Road Atlanta (game doesn't
see it), but the other two work fine. Haven't tried the Spa updater
yet.

Also hit http://tantra.m4driving.sm/LB_F1CS2000_Tracks.htm for Tantra's
y2k tracks. Most of 'em work (read the read mes first!!!), Mmmmm Imola
'94! Mexico! Estoril!

Since I'm not a NASCAR fan, I will probably pass on it (but a demo
might sway my opinion-net racing on a mac with modern graphics and
custom paint jobs for the cars, who cares if it's closed wheels on
ovals! ;-).

Now if only there were a way to bind my MOMO to Photoshop, BBEdit and
Project Builder!!!!

At this rate I'm tempted to remain PC-less till that new nVidia card
ships (something intriguing about vid cards with more cpu and ram than
my first computer! Then again I'm already jonesing for GPL, F1 2002 and
that GTR mod).

Ciao,

Dunno about rednecks, but Macs are a hell of a lot more popular in the US
than they are here in Australia.  It's only the die-hard desktop publishers
that use them here nowadays but nearly every Hollywood movie or TV show
seems to have a Mac in it somewhere.  Maybe it's just the arty-farty types
that like them...

Dan,

Thanks for all the info! Great stuff. I'm expecting F1 2K CS under the
tree this year, so I'm waiting...chomping at the bit is more accurate.
