Well, after messing with some different patches I finally got it
working :D
I actually never played this baby online (back then I had no modem and
no internet). Good to see that people STILL play this game online.
Gonna be a long night..

The tracks are also available, in MP3 format from Aaron Salazar(?)'s site
(he created the tracks) google search for "bullmark" would find it. I got

I was going to say that "back in the day" when I was still chugging at
233mhz, people were reporting problems with high spec cpus (PIII850's etc)
and some have to launch the game up to 40 times.

servers:
for i76 original, you'll need to use "mercnet.activision.com"
for nitro, "gamesrv.activision.com"
I don't think those are available on a fresh install, add them in manually.

cheers, and PREACH THE FUNK! ;o)

I have the same error message, but I don't see any file (either on the
CD or my hard drive) with the  _inst0432 filename. Where should this
file be? I tried replacing the other _inst files with current
versions, but no go, I get even more cryptic messages. Any help would
be appreciated!

OK, I got it installed (there's actaully a zip file with the correct
_INS files on the Activision support site).

But the game crashes as soon as I try to run it, in any mode. Tried
unpatched, and tried the "Gold" patch (version 1.2). Do you remember
which patch worked for you?

Also, are you running under Win98? I'm trying this on a Win2K
computer.

In the main directory of the I76 cd is a file called _ins0432.ex_ or
something like that. But I was messing with different versions of the
install files etc, and all of a sudden it worked, while I didn't knew
exactly what made it working.
And just like John says in his other post, I read on a board that you
simply have to try the install again and again and again untill it
works..

What other cryptic messages do you get btw?

Oh?? Could you give me the url please? I thought I searched all of
Activisions website but didn't find it there..

Yes, the gold version didn't work for me, but I did a clean install
and then installed the v1.081 patch. (http://www.interstate76.com/)
First it didn't work, I got an 'illegal operation' error when I tried
to start it. First thing I did was resetting my pc, and after that the
splash screen did work. But when I chose play and chose d3d I got the
'illegal operation' error again.
What I did then was another reset and start I76 directly with the
I76d3d.exe found in the map where you installed I76 to.

W98, I don't know if it works under Win2K.. it doesn't work on XP I
read..

It's not in downloads, you have to go into the "Get Answers" database,
select I76, and search for "install". The first item is this:

https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/st...

I think you're right - I got it working (with the Gold patch yet!)
under Win98. Seems to be working flawlessly, thanks for the help! If I
hadn't seen your posts I never would have tried to get it working
again.

Unlike many old games that I get nostalgic about, this one has really
aged well. Characters a low-poly, but the presentation and camera work
is better than 90% of today's games. And the gameplay is as fun as I
remember!

Thank John, without his posts I never would have tried to get it
working again :)

Absolutely. Even back then the graphics (in the cut-scenes) were
low-poly, but it was done on purpose to create this special style.
I hated the technically much more advanced movies of I82.. they did
not have the atmosphere I76 had.

Yesterday I did something I never did before - I finished I82. I hated
it so much I uninstalled it in disgust after a couple of missions, but
in a way I was curious how the game would end. I should never have
done that, it was even worse as I expected :-/

The single player game is nowhere near as good as i76's, I'll grant you. I
actually enjoy i82 mutliplayer. I even ran a racing series for it.  The
biggest attraction for me is the *really easy* map editor. It's you're own
little sandbox, even if the game itself is a bit dodgy.

I like 'em all. Been playing i76 since 98, i82 since 99. Still play both on
a regular basis :o)

cheers

No one can ruin a sequel the way Activision can!
