Has anyone been successful running GPL through MS Proxy Server?

I have ADSL and use Windows NT with Microsoft Proxy Server to connect my
home net to the Internet. I am pretty confident in my client configuration
since I can race online with no problem when I just hook up my machine
directly to the net. However, when I attempt to use the proxy server I get a
whole list of the same error on the multiplayer screen "10057: Error
configuring network device".

I use winsock proxy on the client and the server is configured to pass all
TCP and UDP packets transparently. I can multiplay NFS, Q3, Descent 3 all
without problems. GSB also works fine until I actually launch the game. Is
GPL actually a winsock application? Anyone have any idea how to get it
working?

Any help much appreciated.

There is a lot on this issue in the GPL 1.1 readme, chapter 5.

I have exactly the same problem. And I have given up months ago:/. If you come across a solution, please, let me know.

Easy. Use a Linux firewall + ipchains + ip masquerading, works like a charm
and doesn't crash ;-)

this won't work as the MS proxy server does not support port forwarding
- and due to the design of the network code (the server calls back on
the client), you won't succeed with this ... use a linux box with
ip-firewalling, -masquerading and port-forwarding instead. the
mini-howto for setting up the box is in the readme of the 1.1-version I
think ...
or are there any volunteers for writing a GPL-proxy? :-)

Thanks for the advice. I tried Linux but could never get it working. I paid
Red Hat $100 but they don't support setting up Firewalls and refused to help
me. MS Proxy server is easy to configure and works seamlessly with every
other application I've tried, including Port forwarding on either UDP or
TCP. E.g. Real Audio, AOL IM, Quake 3, NFS, Descent 3, GPL Spy boy. GPL
itself is the only application I've tried that won't work.

hm - must because you normally pay about $100 per hour for setting up a
firewall ;-) I agree that setting up a linux-firewall is not easy for
the unexperienced linux user ...

they can all be used with NAT - no portforwarding needed.

forward UDP-traffic for the ports 32766-32786 to your *** pc for
joining a race and ports 6970, 6971 for hosting. if MSPS2 supports port
forwarding this is the way it has to work.

says...

One final point that I don't remember anyone making - you'll probably
have better luck with GPL 1.1.

As far as Linux goes, it's a pain to setup, and even more of a pain to
change if you're not on that box with some regularity, but it's well
worth it.

Your choice of RedHat was a bad one because the typical RedHat
dirtibution isn't really helpful when it comes to making changes beyond
how it's installed.  Slackware would have been a better choice because
it actually relies on you to make manual changes in order to mold it to
your specific needs, but is not for the feint at heart due to its lack of
a graphical install.

If you feel like trying Linux again, I would recommend Slackware 4.0, as
it uses the 2.2.x kernel which allowed me to join remote races (something
the 2.0.x kernel would not let me do).  There's a handful of files you
have to change (manually) to get it up and running as a gateway/firewall,
but like I said, it's well worth it.  With the exception of power
outages, hardware upgrades, and rebooting for kernel updates, my Linux
box has been up 24/7 since November of 1997 without so much as a burp.

What, for Windows NT / MS Proxy? You must be joking, mate ;-) Volunteers for
helping to port GPL to linux, plenty, but programming a proxy for a dying
platform called NT isn't my favourite waste of time at the moment ;-)

Cheers,
