Aureal Inc. Files Chapter 11 Reorganization Case

Aureal Inc. today filed a petition for relief under chapter 11
insolvency in California in an effort to facilitate a reorganization
of its financial affairs. Aureal announced on March 24 the resignation
of all of its executive officers, including its president and CEO, its
chief technical officer, its chief financial officer, and its chief
operating officer and general counsel, along with all senior staff
members of Aureal. The Board of Aureal said in a press statement that
it is searching to replace or turnaround management, and is
considering all necessary actions to either sell the company or its
assets, or wind down the company.

Aureal announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 1999
last month, reporting considerable losses. Revenues for the quarter
were $8.5 million, down from $11.2 million in the third quarter and
$10.8 million in the same period in 1998. Revenues for the full year
totaled $40.3 million, a 59 percent increase over $25.3 million in
1998. Fourth quarter operations generated a net loss of $9.5 million
compared to a loss of $3.5 million in the fourth quarter of 1998. The
year-to-date loss was $26.9 million, compared to a loss of $18.5
million for 1998. Legal expenses attributable to the patent litigation
exceeded $6.4 million in 1999, an increase of over $6 million from the
prior year.

Aureal is a provider of audio "solutions" for the computer, Internet,
and professional audio arenas. The company designs, builds and
distributes audio semiconductor, audio card and software solutions for
personal computers through the OEM and direct-to-customer channels.
Aureal's award-winning product line includes A3D positional audio
technology, Vortex audio processors, Vortex-based sound cards, and A3D
Pro sound design software. For more information on Aureal and its

OUCH!  Maybe Guillemot will buy them up now (didn't they acquire
Hercules?).

Since they were the small guy in the soundcard (chip) business, it was
destined to end this way.

If you're the bigger guy, and you can't make a better product than your
competition, what do you do? -- you suffocate them in litigation and hope
they finally run out of money.

Witness the result.....

Damn! They made good stuff and supported it well--kind of like 3dfx in the
early days.  Hopefully someone will pick them up and put them back on their
feet.  A3D was really nice especially in games like Nascar Racing 3.  But
then the sound card business seems to have even lower margins than the
graphics card business.  I'll have to play "Taps" on my MX300 tonight...

Yes they did.  Darn shame about Hercules too.  The Herc TNT card I had was
awesome.  Gee, maybe there's a connection here.  I bought the Herc TNT card
and they go out of business months later.  I buy an Aureal SQ2500 in
November and now they go bankrupt too.  Hmmm.... maybe AMD should persuade
me to go elsewhere for my next upgrade.  :-)

It's a shame.
A3D technology is far superior to EAX.
I just hope that the game developers comtinue to support it!!!

Yep. I thought I would upgrade from my A3D 1.0 card and bought a
Soundblaster Live value. The  EAX was ok but I ended up putting the A3D card
back in as it simply sounded a bit better. I bought the Soundblaster because
I heard the A3D2.0 card bogged down the system. This was apparently fixed
later with a driver update. DOH

I suspect someone, perhaps with enough muscle to take on Creative (possibly
even Creative?), will pick up Aureal as A3D is too good to just bury.

Whilst I have never owned an Aureal product ( I love my SBLive!) I
have to say this is sad news.  Creative does need competition to keep
prices down.

Maybe with Aureal out of the way, Creative labs could pick up the ball on
A3D and run with it.  They were legally prevented from using it on their
soundcards because Aureal either wouldn't let them or offered it up at
rediculously high licensing fees.

Now that the bigshots at Aureal are taking a bath on their product,
they'll be more willing to share the technology with Creative Labs.

At this point I awoke and the dream quickly faded... :-)

Yep, that really is bad news.  The writing was kind of on the wall after
their entire board and officers resigned the other week.  Too bad.  I was
looking hard at maybe getting the SQ2500, but now I'm a little concerned
because of continued driver support.

But my PCI 338 has been a real trooper.

Todd, that's why flight simming is a true "hobby", it's multi-faceted.  We
are concerned not only with the software half of the hobby, but with
essential hardware half of the hobby as well.  Please try to expand your
thinking.  Thank you.

Uh, computer sims... 3D cards... seems pretty "on topic" to me.
