If Mike Andretti would have change beer and burgers for wine and cheese,
maybe he would have understand how to drive an F1...

My point about PSAA is this; these so called "professionals" that
charge people for autographs SUCK! MOST baseball, basketball, and
football players pocket the money. True, some Racers will charge you in
certian situations, like when they are doing charity appearances, but
the money doesn't go to them. If you went up to Jeff G, Dale E, Rusty,
or any other NASCAR driver at the track (if you can get to them) and
asked for their autograph, they would probably sign whatever you held
out (within reason). But ask someone in baseball or basketball or some
other highlight sports, and you'd have to give them cash!! BS!

Now, as for "Mr. Villeneuve" and his team as well as other
drivers/teams, I would think they could, if nothing else, gain some
popularity and fans by letting Papyrus or whoever use their name and
likeness in a game. It cost nothing for them to say "yes". It's also
FREE advertizment for their sponsors!

Oops...My soapbox just broke. I'm done.

I happen to catch a show about racing (on ESPN, I believe) during the
season and they were talking about the increase in popularity of both
Indycar and Nascar, and also about racing mechandise (posters, model cars,
etc).  As an aside, the person doing the show said that you couldn't get
anything with Villeneuve or his car on it because Players/Villeneuve
refused to license anything dealing with the team.  Since this was with
other racing mechandise (which would generate more money), it stands to
reason that they would refuse the request from Papyrus.  I'm not sure that
it is PSAA or the Bill Waterson (sp?  Calvin & Hobbes) affect.

this was my point in my earlier post.  And this is exactly what I understand
the situation to be when I commented on the first post a couple of weeks
ago.  I believe the name is TM etc. by the estate - done to protect
Gilles interests.  However, this has the effect of preventing Jacques
from using the name on goods as well !  This was substantial discussion of this
point earlier in the Indy season because at the races themselves, one could
not buy any Players stuff with Jacque on it (tshirts etc.)

I am sure I will be corrected if wrong - but i thought this had clearly been
stated many times before.

Some people will never be happy though.

So if someone allows their "likeness" to be used they are money-hungry
bastards, and if they refuse (and hence refuse the $$), they are stuck-up
***s.  Gee, hard to please or what?

I suspect Villeneuve's situation is complicated by his father's estate.
THere was a local musician here that used the stage name Mike Sinatra.
Small time guy really.  Anyway, he gat a call from Frank's lawyers!

I say give JV a break until someone can explain WHY he declined.

Well excuse me, but I think the guy that won IndyCar this year was Jacques
Villeneuve, NOT Gilles...what can be the problem from a legalities standpoint?

I think in reality Jacques saw Indycar as his apprenticeship for F1, and doesn't
want his name associated with what he problably considers an inferior series.  I
think he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps from day one, and has had
his heart set on F1 his whole life.

He didn't seem to want his likeness associated with Player's, either.

We'll have to wait and see if there's a Williams/Renault/Villeneuve marketing
machine waiting to fire up their engines...
