He barely even mentions "simulators". He's talking about console
games, and everyone knows that console gamers have small***s (I
think Sega published a study about it).

You should have done what I do and drive with one hand on the wheel and
one hand down your boxers.

In that case, what are motorcycle simmers? ;-)

People trying to fight a controller problem?

Reminds me of one of my french teacher who thought the opening sequence of
the first Indiana Jones movie was a metaphore for the birth of a heroe...
I think it's fair to say that we love sim racing because of our competitive
nature (specially when racing online) and our love for the sport in the
first place. He we followed his thinking, we could consider people that play
NHL hockey as people wanting to play the role of NHL super stars but didn't
have the ability to the it in the real world. I'd say I play it with my
buddies simply for fun :)
Anyway, I guess the guy had a lot of time to waste between Christmas and New
Years :)

There is another clue in the last sentence:
"...but unless the *** community insists on watching our hobby with
rigorous academic interest..."
Why would we want to spend our time doing that?
We could pay rigorous academics for that.
I would assume that most in the "*** community" prefer more
useful pursuits during their leisure hours. Nor do we get
paid for err, "stuff" like that article.
Some more reasons the "mainsteam press" has yet to attack
racing video games, and also forces that would continue to
reduce such interest:
The racing genre has a higher proportion of
low rated games than any genre I can think of except those
specifically targeted to children's education.
(That is: non-***, non-***, not-even-any-tobacco-advertising,
etc. Gee, we even provide an environmentally safe alternative to
polluting activities :)
Professional and amateur racing has millions of fans world wide.
The advertising budgets for products tied into racing that
are advertised in the mainstream press are appropriately large.
Companies are beginning to exploit that market through
advertising using racing games. Connect the dots.
In the industry, we can tsk-tsk games on the outer fringe that
might bring adverse attention. But mostly to position
our own titles as being cleaner and more wholesome. ;)
