Grand Theft Auto - Is this a joke?

by Jo » Mon, 24 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Just tried to play the Grand Theft Auto demo (3dfx version). This game
has the worst control problems I've ever seen in a computer game - and
I mean EVER, including all the way back to when the Commodore-64 was
the premier *** machine.

Tried gamepad, analog joystick, T2 wheel (which it couldn't work with
at all), and keyboard - and the control just sucks horribly. There is
no analog control at all - with a joystick it doesn't react at all
until you're nearly at the limit, then your guy spins like a balarina.
It's even worse when you're "driving", trying to manuevre a car makes
your average fall-down drunk look like a Mario Andretti by comparison.

I love the concept, the graphics are cool, but as is the game is just
a bad joke - I can't believe they even shipped a demo in such bad
shape.

no it's a great game. it isn't no simulation, this is pure arcade and very
fun to play.

why would you need a T2 to play a game like GTA? this is a keyboard game,
I understand that the 3dfx version is too fast, making it almost
uncontrollable. Play it in non 3dfx and it feels just right, sometimes a
little slow. IF you are looking for eye candy in this game, you won't find
it. It's arcade, kill people, complete tasks do "jobs" for the boss.

Nope, just looking for a game that is possible to control. GTA has the
absolute worst control I've ever seen. If they can't do something as
simple as synchronizing the control-speed to real-time, well that just
underlines my point that these people have no idea how to program
controller support.

If you don't like it, dont buy the dang game.. that's why they make
demos. Also, if you think that they "have no idea how to program
controller support.", e-mail me when you can do better.

A) I can do better. I've programmed emergency response touchscreen
software, and am well aware of the intricacies of low level hardware
user interface programming.

B) Even if I couldn't, that is the most lame-ass argument in the
history of the net. By your logic no consumer should ever, for
example, complain about a car - since they don't personally own the
resources and tools to build one themselves.

I'll agree the control leaves ALOT to be desired.  If they can't get good
analog routines for the joystick I'll prolly re-consider buying this.  Once
you get the hang of the antiquated(sp) controls that do exist it's not that
hard.  The faster vehicles though are impossible to control.  I've found
the Taxi to be one of the best vehicles so far as it's speed doesn't outdo
the controls available.  The Vette, GTO & faster motorcycles are definately
going at ludicrous speed. ;-)  Sure hope they get good Analog routines.

R:

I tried it out this weekend as well and ditto. Control was terrible.

No, that's not my logic.. It's just that you do SO much shittalking over
just about EVERY game that comes out.. I can't imagine what your
expectations are for these games. When you fix the problem with all your
programming skills, show me.. until then quit whining and just play the
games with what you have.. I don't think we'll ever see the "perfect
sim".. From what I can tell I KNOW you'll never see yours..

If I has posted one of those generic "It SUX!" messages you might have
a point. However, detailed descriptions of flaws in a game to not
constitute "shittalking" in my opinion.

Good gameplay, decent graphics (i.e., a good frame-rate), and a usable
interface (including controller device support). Doesn't seem like too
much to expect to me.

What on EARTH are you talking about? It's an arcader, not a sim. That
doesn't mean they can get away with fundamental programming errors
though.

And so you fall back to that lame-ass argument...

Do you actually have any games/sims that you LIKE?

Fine, game, sim, it really doesn't matter..

Sorry, but but it seems like you have such HIGH expectations for every
single new game/sim/whatever that comes out on the market.. not every,
if any, game is going to have the perfect combination.. Basically, the
way I see it is "Good gameplay, decent graphics (i.e., a good
frame-rate), and a usable interface (including controller device
support), pick 2" When a game can combine all 3.. THEN we can set the
standards higher, but for now I don't think you should complain about
what we do have.

Get a new computer and stop whining. If you don't have money for it, save
some money from buying new games.

Also why the forking hell would you want T2 support on a game like GTA. Are
you too lazy to even push those god damn buttons on the keyboard

I don't see yours any better

>Do you actually have any games/sims that you LIKE?

Sure. Nascar2, Jedi Knight, LongBow2, Flying Corps, Moto Racer,
PowerPlay98, Need for Speed 1, Jet Fighter 3. Why do you ask?

Of course I do - why should I ask for any less in the sof***e I buy?

Not asking for perfection, just adequate quality in three departments
(gameplay, graphics, and user interface/control).

This makes no sense whatsoever. My computer (P200 w/3dfx) is fine and
can run even the demanding sims well (LongBow2 for example). A new
computer isn't going to fix the flawed control in GTA.

Maybe you need to get one of those 10 bucks keyboard from Staples. It runs
fine here.  Maybe you are just so good that you can't even make a car turn
