Well, I'm just trying Free Agent for the first time right now.
Obviously not sure yet.

As for filters, killfiles, etc.,  I'm from the "if you don't like it
don't read it" school! :-)

I am using xnews and yes, I am laughing smugly at Outlook users ;)
It supports rules to define article scoring, so you can easily
killfile, prioritise articles, sort them in the order you want,
for example my setup is to first show threads with new articles and
my participation ordered by date, then the most interesting threads
with new articles, then less interesting threads with new articles etc.
And of course you can define what you consider interesting or not
(based ob subject, author etc -- rules are quite flexible)

It also has convenient feature that assigns colors to posters so
it easier to understand who said what in a long thread.

Plus variety of filters, storage options etc etc.

Also it provides keyboard only operation mode for two handed
persons as well as mouse support for three or more handed
persons ;>

And besides xnews is free :)

Each one to their own, if you like the interface and the way OE does
things, then fair enough. But like Fat Bastard said, there are a LOT
of security holes and worms that specifically target OE. So for the
casual user, it can be pretty messy.

Also, if you read binary newsgroups, then you'll need all of the
features Agent supports. Not really relevent for RAS, but it depends
on what groups you read.

I heard that Xnews is the latest and greatest of news readers. Haven't
tried it myself, but sounded pretty impressive.

Just too used to Agent I guess :)

Hehe, I guess I belong to the "old" school of computer users. I work a
lot with very mouse intesive softwar at work, specially geographic
inforamtion systems. So holding on to that mouse for 8 hours a day at
work is not just very tiring, but also not very ergonomical. And
during a short break to check news, I really don't want to use the
mouse by clicking on topics, when all buttons that is needed is "arrow
down" or "space" for next topic and "c+y" (catcup+yes) to go to the
next newsgroup.

Yea, I've used Xnews too and have a copy on cdr - it's good too. But I
still prefer the interface of Agent.

For what it's worth, I downloaded Xnews and am giving it a try.  Since I use
Outlook for mail and then have to use another program OE for mail, I figured
why not try a different other program for mail...  So far it seems like a
decent enough interface, capable of handling multiple servers.  If I find
anything really great or anything really bad, I'll post a follow-up.  I
figure it can hurt to just get away from some of the MS software simply
because so many people have MS in their sites...  Thanks.

Thanks.  I grabbed the file from one of the mirrors, obviously it wasn't the
most current.  As you can tell, I've upgraded now...

Same problems here, except that I have to jump from keyboard to
mouse and back approximately every 5 seconds. Good thing about that
is that this skill can be also used to move the hand from the steering
wheel to the gearbox lever and back:)
I have even had to learn to use left hand for mouse as well as right
one to let right one has some rest.
Good thing about that is that I will probably feel quite comfortable
in british cars ;>

OE works fine for me - up, down, space, tab, 'menu', T is about all I
use ;-)

another nice one is slrn, which is also text-based and much
easier to learn than GNUS (in my book), but then again I am an
old-time trn user.

heres more on running slrn under windows:

hah! wimp! ;-) There are plenty of gui-based newsreaders
available for Linux, KNode comes with KDE for example.
