Maybe I'm just stupid and can't set up Outlook Express properly, but I
suspect I could be accessing RAS better'.

For example, I sometimes can't see a post at home that I posted from
Google that day at work, even though my post appears when I search on
my name (in Outlook, I mean).  Synchronise newsgroup doesn't seem to
help, or even hangs trying to download all the posts.

So, is Outlook Express pants, or am I?  If it's not me, anyone using
something else with a big grin on their face, laughing smugly at
Outlook users??!!  ;-)

I hate Outlook Express for anything. I use Agent for both email and
news, but  you can get the free version called Free Agent if you just
want it for news.

I'm using a different news-server at work and at home, and the one at
home suck at the moment. I never see posts made at home at work, and
probably noone else either.

Oh yes. Install NTemacs (search for it). It's a windows port for a
text editor common to unix/linux users. It comes with a news-reader
plugin called gnus. Everything is text based with keyboard input. No
mouse use is required which is a big relief. Posts are still threaded
though, so no need to worry about that. A bit of a hassle to learn
though, but once you get the basics, you might start to laugh at
outlook users :)

Yup, OE really sucks. Agent is the bees knees!

Maybe I'm just part of the ill-informed masses but could someone tell me
what I'm missing out on by using OE?  Are there features in Agent or other
programs that I'm simply unaware of?  Been using OE just fine for years but
I'd consider something else if it were worth it.

Eh, I'm been using OE, trouble-free, to access newsgroups since it first
came out.  Before that I used the Netscape Newsreader.  Can't remember what
I used before that...  Probably something Delphi provided...

Install a text editor to get a newsreader...  That's a strange suggestion.

What's the advantage to not having a mouse?  Doesn't every computer worth
it's weight in peanuts have a mouse these days?  Everyone should certainly
be capable of operating a mouse as well...

Free Agent doesn't have filters, that's a major drawback.  There goes your
killfile!

It's not so much functionality as more to do with efficiency,
security, options etc. I know you can configure OE to be secure, but
lots of people don't and with Agent it comes secure already. Unless
you are the type that runs attachments without knowing what they are.
I've just been using it for a very long time and like it so I see no
reason to use anything else. When I first used it I found it a bit
overwhelming, but with a little time spent learning how to set it up
to my preferences it has become second nature. Just try it and give it
some time before you decide if you like it or not.

I believe you also can't sort the topics on date or alphabet with Free
Agent.. I use Agent. Though I still think it's user-unfriendly with
waaaay to much options, I tried a lot of newsreaders and Agent
remained the best so far.

When you set the view of this newsgroup to "Show all messages" and uncheck
"Group messages by conversation", then sort on the "From" column,  do you
still not see it? It has to be there otherwise Outlooks search would not
find it. (Search ignores your view settings that might explain the
difference).
Perhaps the "From" is different when you post from google?
