MMX issue, 3DFX ?

by Badrulhisham Bahadz » Mon, 24 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hi !

I'd like to upgrade my Cyrix 166+ to a Pentium 200 MHz.  This would
just be a temporary upgrade before I can afford a PII class system.

Now there's something like a 90 difference between P200nonMMX and
P200MMX processor.
I also own a Pure3D card. I use the system primarily for playing
racing & flight sims. (LB2/EF2000/F1RS/TOCA etc)

My question :
Would it be a wiser option to buy the nonMMX processor since I already
have a 3Dfx card ? Is the performance difference really noticeable
between MMX vs nonMMX (10-20% ? 10-20fps ?) ? ??

regards,
Badrul

Here in the US, there is a very minimal difference between the two (see
http://www.pricewatch .com) ... so here it is a non-issue - get the MMX
if the mainboard supports it.

But if I had to pay a large difference, I would not get the mmx.  I
haven't seen anything that uses it to any great length POD included. =

Personally I think it (MMX) is overrated ... but that is just my
opinion.

I read something from Intel and they said the mmx is is basicaly dead and
after the currant chips go away so will mmx .

As with everything else, "MMX" was a solution rushed to market, more
to tie in market share and have the trademark associated with Intel.
MMX2 will be better, lacking the switching problems of the current
version (slow changeover from MMX to FPU) as well as adding some much
needed instructions.

Until then, MMX is actually very good, as the increased L1 cache
boosts performance quite noticably (nothing to do with MMX, but you've
got to look on the bright side!).

Cheers!

Let's see, a P166MMX costs 95. I challenge you to show me where you
can buy a P166 "classic" for a fiver, assuming you can even find one
now.

Cheers!

The MMX makes almost no diff. unless the game supports it.

This is not true.  There is a considerable performance difference
bew*** a classic Pentium and an MMX type, mainly though because of
added on-chip cache in the MMX chips.

True, but there are other differences in the MMX Chip, most
importantly the 32K L1 cache, that make it worth the extra money over
the Pentium Classic.
