N2003 Steering Ratio

by Andrew Hollo » Fri, 30 May 2003 06:21:46

Hello,

Since I've started running the GPL converted tracks in N2003, I've found it
difficult to get around the two 180 degree hairpins at Monaco, even with a
12:1 steering ratio. I have the steering hack turned off, as I don't like
the feel of it, and never have, not even in GPL, as I just can't judge the
slow turns with it enabled. I was wondering what others were doing at Monaco
to get around those corner, and what your thoughts are on the matter. By the
way, I do go around them very slowly, so it isn't an understeer problem, and
I do use all the road!

I can make it around the hairpins at Mexico, Rouen and Spa okay (Mexico is
only just, and so could never pass anyone there!).

It would be nice if the garage set-up screen would allow ratios higher that
12:1, as GPL does, but I cannot see any way of tweaking this. So, if anyone
with that certain level of cunning knows how this could be done, I'd be most
interested. I suppose I could calibrate my wheel (a MOMO Force) in N2003
without using full lock, though this doesn't sound too appealing!

Thanks,

Andrew.

N2003 Steering Ratio

If you have seen any NASCAR race footage from the pits, those big ugly
beasts can't turn very sharply.  They purposely use lower steering ratios to
make precision adjustments easier on the wide oval turns.  I am sure if you
took a WC stock car to Monaco in real life, it wouldn't make the turn
either.  The car and the track are inappropriate for each other.  I am sure
someone will figure out how to put in a higher (lower numerically), fake
steering ratio though if enough people really want to drive these bulky
workhorses around tracks meant for thoroughbreds.

I know they're relatively big and cumbersome, but it's still fun to drive
them anywhere.

Thinking about it, the problem is due to the differences between a real car
and a simulator with a wheel. This arises because in a real car, the
steering ratio should not have an effect on total lock achievable, in that
you just need to turn the wheel through more revolutions to get to the end
stop that defines full lock. However, in a game, with a wheel that cannot do
complete revolutions until some end stop is reached, the total lock becomes
severely limited, even with high ratios.

With a wheel, even a MOMO with (I think) 270 degrees of motion (which is
more than most), the only way around this problem is non-linear steering
combined with low steering ratios, or some steering lock enhancement at low
speed
(which I don't like!). Until a multiple revolution *** wheel comes out, I
think I'm just going to have to lump it.

Andrew.
