Grand Prix Legends / WINE / VNC?

Hi folks,

I have been trying to get GPL to run on a hosted SuSE box with a local
provider without much luck, and I thought maybe someone can point me
in the right direction.

I'm using a rather new wine build (installed from binary RPM for SuSE
8.1, 200406xx I believe), and for instance Replay analyzer works
great.

I have set the renderer to softdll.dll in the ini file, switched
fullscreen mode off, but when I try to run GPL like this:

wine 'c:\sierra\gpl\gpl.exe'

I get the following error:

fixme:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_SetCooperativeLevel (0x40407e68)->(00010022,00000011)
err:module:import_dll Library redline.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\sierra\\gpl\\renddll.dll") not found
err:module:import_dll Library verite.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\sierra\\gpl\\renddll.dll") not found
fixme:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_SetCooperativeLevel (0x4040a448)->(00010022,00000011)

GPL runs fine at home on my gentoo box using the opengl renderer, so I
wonder if this might be related to trying run wine through VNC; as
I've said, replay analyzer and other software runs great in this
setup.

All the best & thanks in advance for any ideas,

uwe

Two things here could be the problem, probably both. gpl doesn't like
running in software mode in a window (OpenGL is okay though of course),
and ime VNC isn't that good at handling 3D (software or hardware)  in a
window, on windows at least.

Suggest you set the desktop to 640x480 & run gpl in software mode
full-screen. Wine aside, I ran my first race server like this without a
monitor, keyboard or mouse. The framerate was crappy as hell as you'd
expect, but you could see the replay window & everything ;-)

Also, if you run as a dedicated server it won't have to draw the replay
window, you just see static. Might give your install one less thing to
worry about ;-)

a bit OT: how do you set up your controller under linux/wine?

i have ms sidewinder ff wheel and under linux jscal detects 13(!!!) axes
and in GPL it only detects wheel and accelerator movement but no brake
pedal movement. i tried playing with jscalibrator but without success.

i'm using gentoo linux.

thank you,

b.

13 Axes might in fact be correct, as most of the coolie hat buttons
are handled as up/down digital axes in the widest sense of the word,
so just assign those "axes" to the buttons on the coolie hat.

cheers,
